Retrofit OBC

eBay.co.uk: Bmw Mini Retro-Fit On Board Computer Light Stalk (item 220070664966 end time 21-Jan-07 17:21:38 GMT)

Considering buying this (the one option I really wish MINI had!)

The seller says a wiring harness kit is required, I thought it was a straight swap? If it is needed, can I buy this alone?

Many thanks in advance

Yes you can - it's part number 61 12 0 140 552 and about £20 from a MINI/BMW dealer.

Definitely worth buying the stalk from eBay as they are over £80 from the dealer

Martin,

If you already have a steerng column mounted tacho with temp display then surely you don't need the harness you mention?

Yeh...you still need the wiring, even with the tach...

The wires run (min if you do it DIY rather than buy the factory loom...) is a wire from the stalk to the back of your speedo....

You also need the car coded to activate it, unless you are very lucky....

Yes you do, as the harness basically connects the new stalk button to the back of the large speedo dial which then drives the rev counter display to give you the new info

I have a R54 Cooper which has the OBC lever. It just toggles between the external temperature and the speed. I took this to mean that I haven't got the full OBC spec, so could I have the rest of the features such as MPG etc added? Or does it just need reprogramming to show more than it's doing now?

Yup, just needs reprogramming to give you the full OBC

Not sure what an R54 Cooper is though!

I love Mini dealers!!!

I've just rang my local BMW/Mini dealer RE retro fitting the OBC. They have quoted me £276.20 for the indicator stalk, wiring kit and fitting. I asked for the price of the stalk on its own which is £99.95, so I then asked if I obtained the stalk elsewhere (i.e off ebay) how much would the wiring kit cost + fitting. The woman told me they order it as a kit so they wouldnt fit it if I got the stalk myself! I told her I had the part number for the wiring on its own, "no sir it is supplied as part of a kit and you can not get it on its own, we will not fit it if you supply the parts"!
