Fastest route is not the shortest route.... Fastest route tries to take speed and possible lights into consideration and may route you on the highway if it thinks it can get you there quicker.
I thought that too that the fastest route was using quicker roads, but why have the "Use motorways" option if it is going to direct you on to motorways anyway as these will be quicker?
Just another option.... Remember, the NAV has no way of knowing where lights are or if there is traffic unless you have TMC. You can select the fastest route minus the motorways and it is possible that the route will still be different than the shortest route.
Came back from Alton Towers today, I had Use motorways option on firstly and it took me the back way to the park, i.e if anyone knows the area not by JCB/Rochester?
Then I selected Shortest route and it was 20 miles shorter than the Quickest/Use motorways function but added 15 minutes on as it took me through Stoke on Trent, but after getting past that took me on A roads where I could easily do 60/70 comfortably and made it back in pretty much the same time as the other 2 options...
