Thumbs up Alpine CDE-9881R good??

Hi
I was thinking of getting a Alpine CDE-9881R with the amber lighting to match my 51 plate cooper

This looks a solid buy as it comes with the ipod connection lead and also amber lit to match the car's dash.
Its Alpine too which is all good and not bad money!

Anyone got this or can recommend it?

Cheers guys

Maybe a word of caution. I've bought a 9870 with the optional lead to connect my ipod. When I connect the ipod the headunit displays 'searching' and I can't get any further.

Alpine tech support were as much use as a chocolate teapot.

I'm stuck... Good luck with yours

I have an Alpine 9850Ri with the iPod connection and its been fine with a variety of iPods connected. In fact it has been so good I bought one for my Classic Mini as well!

I have this head unit in mine, the amber display is spot on and looks great at night. I was going to change the speakers but after installing the 9881R it really showed what an utter pile o' ***** the existing OEM unit is!!

The stereo is much louder and can bass can be increased at higher levels without distortion. Needless to say, I'm not going to bother with the hassle of changing the speakers, I'm perfectly content. I mainly listen to stuff like Alexisonfire, At The Drive-In, Incubus, Capdown, Biffy Clyro, Deftones, Thrice.... so can't vouch for R&B, dance etc etc.

The only slight annoyance is even once it's set to Amber (2nd setting) its only amber when its switched on. So when the stereo is off the buttons are a clear green colour, not a killer problem but its a shame they weren't just clear.

The ipod connection works fine for me (30gb video) no issues with it at all... the navigation interface on the alpine is pretty cack though, say you select an artist beginning with "S".. when you go back to select artist it starts from "A" and takes agges to scroll through if you have lots of music. It's actually quicker to unplug it, find the track/album and plug it back in !

Sorry no decent pics of it installed or even at night but this is the nearest I can get, it doesn't look bad but it's clearly not oem. I paid about £130 ish iirc....

Wicked cheers mate
Looks all good. I know the post is old but I still not got it yet christmas and all...
DAMN IT!!!

I listen to mainly rock too although I happily listen to dance etc and am not usually fussy!
The alpines can usually handle anything. The head units are pretty solid and drive the speakers pretty well

I dont think the standard BOOST is that great. Good that its there cause at least I have CD for the time being but its pretty fussy on CDR disks as it skips with them quite a bit
