non-standard stereo removal

Hi Guys!
i'm new to the forum had my 53 plate cooper s since july and love her to bits.

The only problem that i have is that it came with a non-standard stereo in it which is pretty cheap and nasty. Want to fit my pioneer head unit in so i can use my ipod and the old one won't come out.

i have found the thread about removing the standard stereo - and before i started messing again i wanted to know if it is the same theory for removing a non standard.

any help would be great!

thanks in advance

Mel.x

p.s nice forum!

your non-std stereo should be fitted with an adaptor plate which turns the dash 'hole' into a standard DIN sized one for aftermarket stereos. if this is the case you should be able to slide out your existing stereo without having to dismantle the centre stack. most stereos come out by sliding a pair of thin flat metal pieces down the sides of the unit which then latch onto the stereo so that it can be pulled out. then your new one can be simply slid back into the same hole

I have fitted stereos in the past to my other cars but this won't shift!!

When I changed by MINI, I had the HU transferred from the old MC to the new one by the dealer. When I came to change the HU later, I found that the dealer had screwed the HU into the cradle in a similar way to the OEM HU. I only found this after spending ages trying to remove the HU with the removal keys.

Just follow the instructions in the FAQ to remove the OEM HU, and once you have the dash pillars removed you'll see if someone has used screws.
