Question Sat nav shows North......when facing South??? Any ideas??

Firstly, Hi!
Brought my g/f a 2002 Cooper only a few days ago from an independant dealer and it soon became apparent that whilst driving in one direction, the sat nav showed me driving in the opposite direction!
I will obviously be revisiting the dealer, but wondered if this is a common problem and somethigni can sort myself? I've searched the forum and found loads of great stuff but nothing specific to this fault.
The car has the Mk3 version of the sat nav system SW 3-1/63 so will be looking fo the Mk 4 version but not in the immediate future.

Many thanks in advance
Russ

Ah, you have the Australian version meant for down under. I will take it off your hands & rid you of the problem.

It will only show direction of travel if you zoom down to 900 yds or less, otherwise the North arrow always points to the front of the car and the direction arrow on the map changes.
Hope this helps

There are different views that you can select. One of them is that the map is always orientated with north to the top of the screen. This can be fixed selecting "map positioning" and then "travel direction".

??? Never seen this on the MK3 or MK4... The OP definitely has an MK3 unless the 4 was retrofitted.

Thanks for the comments so far. The car definitely has Mk3 SW3-1/63 and zooming doesnt help.
Just to add more detail:
The North indicator in the top left of the screen is pointing physically South even when vehicle is facing North (verified with Garmin hand held), i.e. Driving car actually North shows the vehicle travelling South on the map. Therefore when i left home last night to pick said g/f up from work, i left Portsmouth, travelled North up the A3M for 10 miles and the sat nav showed me as being just South of the Isle of Wight!!
It seems as though the compass may need reseting?!?

Any other ideas welcome folks.

Thanks
Russ

Ahh, I misunderstood what you were saying.

If you go into the service screen (hidden) can you see if you are actually getting satellites? To get into the service screen, you need to go to the setup menu and then press and hold the "menu" button for about 5 to 10 seconds. Another menu should show up where you can view diagnostics.

I would check that. The MINI has wheel sensors that will move the map but without a satellite to give an accurate position, it would easily lose it's location and report it off. If that is the case, it is possible that the antenna is disconnected or needs to be replaced.

They are..... MK3 or 4 depending on the year. Maybe I'm just not understanding what you are saying. No worries, I misinterpreted the OP as well.

Sorry guys, i don't think anyone misenterpreted me, more likely that i didnt explain the issue very well!
I've gone into the hidden service menu and the GPS Tracking info page shows 8 visible satellites and in the GPS Status page is does not show any longtitude or latitude readings?!? Not sure if it should or not though.
DaFlake..............thanks for the very useful info so far but do you know if i should be seeing a longtitude or latitude reading with the car parked and in the diagnostic hidden menu?

Cheers Russ

Not sure on the MK3 but on my MK4 there is a lat long with 8 satellites. You might try a power cycle to see if that fixes it. (Disconnect and reconnect the battery)

Ok. Just disconnect and reconnect or discharge system via earth leakage i.e. Connect + and - terminals of loom together to discharge capacitors?

Thanks Russ

Just disconnect and reconnect. This will force a reboot of the nav system.

Or pull/reinsert the fuse. I believe it is F22 for the navigation.
