Help! Chrome speedo + a screw

Just got my chrome interior from newministuff and it's brilliant..still waiting on their handbrake though.

Anyway got all the kit on except the speedo. I have a 56 plate convertible, how on earth do you get the speedo ring off????

Also as i was unscrewing the rev counter i dropped a screw behind <cough> my husband thinks this will cause the screw to lodge somewhere and my steering wont work. Is it doing any damage wherever it fell?

Please help!!

Go to Diy and FAQ at top of MINI2.com above (Red Strip) and select Interior then How to fit OEM chrome line interior into a pre-2005 model

The Modern MINI magazine method is less brutal but involves unscrewing part of the speedo surround:-
March 2008 issue of Modern MINI magazine has a comprehensive step by step photo fitting guide by MiniMatt for the OEM interior chrome pack including dismantling the speedo and rev counter..........starting on page 42.

I doubt the screw will be a problem, eventually it may fall out on its own or you can remove the bottom steering column cowling to look if your that worried. Next time stick the screw to the screwdriver with a blob of grease or similar, or use a magnetic tipped screwdriver but even that won't always work with a stainless steel screw as they are often non-magnetic!

Hello all, first post for me. I have been lurking and learning. I too can't figure out how to remove the speedo bezel and I could not find the above mentioned DIY by Paul Mullet. Can anyone provide the actual link or point me better in the correct direction?
Thanks,
Bill

Of course, I did not offer all the necessary information ... I have a 2nd gen Mini, not the first. It seems all the instructions are for the first gen. I sent Modern Mini an email about how to go about ordering a back issue since it doesn't seem to be addressed on their website, being in the US it may be problematic getting my hands on the March 2008 issue dealing with this topic.

I just fitted the chromeline interior to mine too! Great looking mod!

I didnt have any probs with the centre ring but I got the nav. The ring just unclipped right off for me. There was a clip at the bottom of the ring. If you look it should be there.
Dont take my word for it though as its prob slightly different. Some seem to get it off easily whereas others have to fiddle around.

Dont worry about losing a screw! I lost 1 when I done mine! Ooops! I read the warnings but it was the smallest of slips then next thing... GONE!
I might remove the bottom part of the column cover cause it annoys me knowing its there as it wont take long to pop it off and back on again

Thanks SportDan, I wish the process were so easy for the gen 2 MINIs, the rings are attached to the black dash pieces and the whole mount has to come off. I can't figure out how to remove the trim to get to the mounting screws that hold the whole assembly on.

Jeez. Looks a nightmare for 2nd gen owners!

JW's guide is worth a look for the facelift owners. That was the one I went by when doing mine

Wow! Jackpot! Exactly what I was looking for and more! I can't thank you enough for this ... and since I am never satisfied, I don't suppose you replaced all your R56 speakers and photo'd that process too??? Sheesh, this is one hard car to work on!

Mab01uk: Thanks again so much, I just removed the speedo bezel, your instructions were perfect. I would never have guessed the location of the top two screws.

Glad to hear it helped you, unfortunately I can't take the credit for the excellent pics and write up as I eventually found the PDF on a US Mini forum whilst trying to do a similar swap on a 2nd Gen Mini.
