DIY Converting a 2 Spoke Steering Wheel to a 3 spoke Multi Function steering Wheel

Hello guys,
So about a month ago i bought my wife an R56 MINI ONE quite nice with loads of extras...... i heard that if you put a Multifunction steering wheel insted of the 2 spoke steering wheel it should work fine (i mean the cruze controle, radio functions ,etc...)

My question is this....
Is it right what ive heard?
The guy also mentioned some kind of lead to buy which costs around GB15
What is this lead?
Do i need to program the car at BMW?
Hope someone can help
Thanks
All the very best
Alex

It's possible

You need to order a three spoke steering wheel (to take the buttons), then the spokes with buttons themselves to go on the wheel, then a new airbag (3 spoke airbag is different to your two spoke), a new switch backing plate, then the whole lot needs to be recoded by your dealer/BMW.

Not a cheap job/parts list - I'd imagine you'd be looking at a £1000 GBP bill for parts and dealer labour to have it fitted by them.

hello thanks for your reply
so i already put a 3 spoke steering wheel with airbag and all in place....
Also the socket found on the multi function steering wheel did have a place waiting for it on my steering colum backing plate and i just slided the pin socket in its place.

SO QUESTION:
To make it work all i need is to take it to the BMW dealer????????

thanks

you have posted in the wrong forum, but if it is anything like the first gen mini its a massive job, hence mini cabrio saying it will cost around £1000, bmw will charge you 6 hours labour to install the wiring loom that is nessescary to operate cruise control, radio, phone etc, thats because it requires removal of many parts. its not as easy as just swapping a wheel i'm afraid

of course this could be different for the R56 which you have

with the 2nd generation MINI's this task should be very easy
i do have all the parts on the car now and all i need now is to reprogram the car.
guess it should be an easy job to do, i should take this mini to a friend who has diagnosis and might be able to do it for me insted of taking it to BMW
will wait and see
alex
