DIY Cheap Auto-Up passengerwindow R50/R52/R53

Hoi Folks,

I've discovered a great and very cheap mod to get the passenger window to auto-up with just a single short flick of the switch.

It involves adding a 22 microfarad capacitor and a 100 Ohm resistor to the toggle switchpanel or the wiring that goes to the toggle switchpanel. These cost about 10 cents each at your local electronic-parts shop.

What it does is letting the Main Computer (BC1) think that the switch is still pressed for about 6 seconds which is enough to close the passenger window fully.

The capacitor and te resistor are connected in series. They then are connected parallel to the switch.

On foto 1 you see the switch panel that's removed from the car (you have to remove the downtubes first).
Foto 2 shows how to open the back of the switchpanel by unlocking 6 locking tabs (3 on each side pictured in the green circles)
Foto 3 shows where to connect the capacitor and the resistor.
The capacitor is polarity sesnitive and the - (minus) has to be connected to the ground plane (either directly or via the resistor) the resistor is not polarity sensitive and can be connected either way.

I used the via's on the circuitbaord to connect the components. The capacitor (plus) is connected to the lower of 2 via's shown in the picture. The - of the capacitor is connected to the resistor and the other side of the resistor is connected to the via of the ground plane.

If you're not keen on soldering the circuitboard there's of course another way.

It uses the same components (capacitor 22 microfard minimum 25 volt and a 100 Ohm 1/4 Watt resistor)
You would have to unplug the wiring that goes to the switchpanel. In this wiring loom serch for the "Brown with black stripe" wire (this is the ground) and the "Green with blue stripe" Wire which is the signal wire.

Connect the minus of the capacitor to the Brown/Black wire. Connect the plus of the capacitor to the resistor and connect the other side of the resistor to the green/blue wire.

Insulate the bare wires and reconnect the wiring loom to the switchpanel and test if the window goes fully up from fully down.

In the end, there can be only ONE

brilliant, but would this change the behavior of the window if i wanted to, for example, only roll the window up half-way?

The window can be stopped halfway (or whereever you want) by flicking the switch down. The window wil stop at that position

Hi,
This is a fantastic idea. Just a question, What volts were cap/res in?
I went to buy these today and the store had both in 63v and 25v!
Thanks, Shane

Either of those should be OK as long as more than 15V

Nice idea

It's important to make it clear that this modification converts the "up" switch in to an "always close for six seconds more than you click for" switch.
Yes, someone who knows to click "down" to stop the up movement has control, but other users might be surprised - please be careful with passengers (and the dealership techs)!

Australia Right Drive

Hi All,

I need some help!

I have the parts listed but I need advise!

Has anyone done this mod on a right hand drive MINI. I pulled my switch pannel apart and had a look at the circuit board and only got confused as there is more circiutry on the other end of the board for the right window switch.

If anyone know could you please advise me....how to...

Thanks, Shane
