I have retrofitted the dual gauges on the steering column that come with the chrono and nav packages. All looks good and works well with both speedo and rev counter working. The on-board computer displays correctly in the rev counter window and all the warning lights on the rev counter side are working.
On the speedo side mileage and odometer are displaying correctly and the reset button does what you'd expect. However, none of the warning lights on the speedo side are working. I assume this is due to coding, or lack of it.
Question is, has anyone done this before and managed to get it working? Or has anyone asked their dealer about getting this coded?
How it's done is really easy. There are 2 T25 torx screws behind the standad rev counter. Remove these. Get the longest torx driver you can find, there's not much room behind there. Once removed the rev counter lifts off. There's also a plastic trim piece just under the screws to make it all look nice, that lifts off too. Unplug the rev counter.
I then used an electric jig-saw to cut the plastic trim piece straight so it would fit the dual gauge, it's obvious what needs done when you see it.
Then just plug in the dual gauge and scew it back together. One thing to note, if the new rev counter is sitting at 1100rpm when the engine is off, disconnect the battery for about 30secs, then reconnect. This seems to recallibrate all the gauges and everything works again. Job done!
Thanks for the links btw, I'll check them out when I get home. Am on the phone so not the easiest for browsing.
Anyone got any ideas on this? I know it'll need coded by the dealer, just looking some pointers on what the impact will be on the centre speedo, what coding might be needed, cost and, well, is it possible?
OK the column pack is a dumb display driven by the centre instrument pack.
There is no coding for the option of centre speedo + twin column pack.
The column speedo warning lights are not working because the central speedo does not know you have a column speedo fitted.
IF you get your car coded for Chronopack then ALL the column dial warning lights will work BUT the central speedo will NOT work!
Suggest you live with what you have got.
same here, but i'm going to buy a sat nav screen to replace the centre speedo. so i will have to get my car coded for the sat nav pack, right?
i've got a german R50 and bought a twin column pack from the US, which has the "service engine soon" and "brakes" lights on the speedo side. the german twin column pack seems to have different (rounded) lights there, but i don't know if the purpose of these lights is the same as with the US ones.
should i get a US sat nav screen that matches the US twin column pack then (different lights or something?) or does it not matter?
also can i do the coding myself with a odb2 coding tool? is it possible to get the right codes somewhere?
No, coding for sat nav does NOT exist, it is the same as for Chronopack.
All Sat Nav screens are the same US, UK, Germany etc.
NO coding must be done using correct tool.
My local independant BMW place had the correct tool and codes.
I downloaded user manuals to see how the warning light arrangements differ between R50 models (2001 - 2004 pre-facelift and 2004 - 2006 facelift).
The pre-facelift speedo and twin column seem to have different warning light arrangements. Some lights are even missing (combined turning indicator arrows on pre-facelift minis with twin column pack, left and right turning indicator arrows on facelift minis with twin column pack).
So i dont think it'll be possible to retrofit / code the 2005 twin column pack to my 2003 Cooper R50, even if the plug is the same... i hope someone can prove me wrong
It can be done using the chronopack retrofit coding.
I had a 2006 twin pack coded to a 2003 R53 fine.
Don't worry about the warning lights, the BCU and centre pack will sort it out for you.
I retro fitted a chrono pack in my 2002 Mini Cooper yesterday and now don't seem to have the outside temperature. Is there 2 different types of dual dials or do I just have to wait until it gets codes on Thursday for it to appear?
