Unhappy gsm & radio mute

I'm gonna install my wife's handsfree set into her MINI Cooper and saw the connector layout in the FAQ section.
Looks easy just connect the mute-wire from the handsfreeset to pin 11 on connector CB891-A.
When I looked further I also saw on connector CB891-C pin 6 TEL+ and on pin 12 TEL-.
Would that be to connect the speakerwire from the handsfreeset too? So that you can hear the one speaking too on the car stereo??

Hi. Here are the connection details:
Head Unit mute when you feed 0V (GND) on CB891-A pin 10.
Head Unit wake-up if turned off and "Phone" in display when feeding +12V on CB891-A pin 11.
Speaker output from GSM handsfree on CB891-C pins 6 and 12.

You may have to modify your HF unit to obtain these signals. I have, but I am waiting for my `S to install it. (december)
Please give me a note if this works.
Regards,
Tore

Sorry ToreB, almost there...

Pin 10 is where you connect the "phone in use" lead from the HF kit. This must go low (0v) to trigger. The HU will then mute and say "PHONE". So this would be your most basic connection using the HF kit speaker.

Pin 11 is used to power up the HU and enable the HF speaker input on pins 6 & 12. This needs pin needs 12V to trigger it. The source for this signal could come from a few places...

- If your HF kit has a "phone switched on" (as opposed to in use) line use this. Mine did not.
- Connect pin 11 to pin 16. Then the input will be constantly enabled while the ignition is on. This might introduce background noise though and also would not allow you to use the phone with the ignition off.
- Lastly build an interface, as I did, so that when the "phone in use" line goes to 0V you also get the +12v.

6 & 12 is already configured for a speaker level input
from the HF kit and the sound will come out over front speakers. So you just remove the HF speaker and connect the output straight to the HU.

I know all this cos I had my Nokia HF kit wired up this way. I think there are still a couple of Picsin my gallery. Since changed my HU.

Have fun

Excuse my previous somewhat inaccurate posting. Me, myself and GaryM are completely agreed in this matter.
I have a highly modified Siemens portable handsfree unit ready for installation in my S arriving week 49.
I have installed a relay that produces both +12V and 0V when phone is in use.
Regards,
Tore

Thumbs up Tanx 4 the detailed describtion!!

Tanx 2 GaryM and ToreB for the detailed describtion both of you gave. It's very helpfull to install the handsfree set in my wife's MINI Cooper. You see I rather go in a battle prepaired. However the battle is not on, YET !!
First we have to decide where and how the 'holder' has to be placed, but as you can understand it's also a matter of looks, functionality and ergonomics.
I'll show it when it's finished.

Cheers, take a look in my gallery. I chose to mount the phone next to the drivers side window vent. This means that it could not be close to your hands and eyes. The common position is to mount it next to the stereo. Dashmount do a bracket for this. I did not like this position though as I thought it crowded the stereo. It's your choice. Search the forums cos there are several posts on this showing the different positions.

Well, haven't actually tested the handsfree setup yet, I need a car to test it in! My Cooper S will arrive next month, so I'll have to wait a couple of weeks or so...
I am also curious to see the type of radio in this new car, I wonder if it will be the same model as yours, bet the wiring is the same though. I also have to get the service manual for my radio. Just for curiosity.
Regards
Tore
