Annoying rattle found but need help!

Hi,

Can someone please tell me if this part actually does anything or can i just seal it up?

Basically on my first gen mini if you look at the middle of the top dash near the windscreen there is what i can only describe as what looks like a button! it is circular and sits right in the middle of the dash , well my one is rattling like hell and is very very annoying! Does this part actually do something or is it just there for the sake of it?

Hope someone can help as its driving me mad! it is 100% this as when in motion if my partner holds it the rattle will stop instantly and it also wiggles if you move it.

I have stoped all rattles now except a minor on witch your saying but not so bad
Iv read up and the top dash needs to come up and ima put some sticky tape down the sponge type. Then put dash back on.
There's a write up how to remove it.

I believed the button youre describing is the light sensor for the auto headlights? or where one would be fitted if you have the option.

So would it be ok to just put a small bit of glue just to stop the rattle?

If the car has climate control a/c it will be a solar sensor, otherwise a blanking plate. Will it pop-out so you can put tape on the inside of the support hole?
