The rear speakers in a convertible are not 6x9's. I think they are 6.5" but may be as small as 5.25".

Some people are like a Slinky ........ not really good for anything, but you still can't help
but smile when you shove them down the stairs

You would probably have to start cutting metal, not a good idea!

Okay it's r53 that have 6x9 rear as standard I have not done my homework as good as I thought and I have also managed to order 6 3/4 for the front and biggest is 6 1/2 so I'm gonna have to cut the door by the looks of things :/

The R50 Cooper comes with 6x9's in the rear as standard.
They are awful, replaced mine with Infinity Kappa 6x9's.
In the Summer i'm replacing those with some Focal 6x9's.
The front were 5 1/4 inch and i replaced those with 165mm
MB Quart components, which i'm replacing with Focals too.
The speakers sound great, especially as they are powered with MTX
amps, but they have been in for 7 years, so it's time for an upgrade.

It really depends if your any good at DIY really.
I made my own spacer rings to allow the fitting of the 165mm
MB Quart speakers.
I designed these to use the original mounting holes.
I had seen some spacer rings for larger speakers that required you
to drill additional holes on the door.....no way i was doing that!
