New Stereo

Folks - I've started to change the headunit in my partners 2004 mini one. Got the old one out and ordered the new harness etc for the round pin fittings. I've noticed that the new headunit had an RCA output at the rear - the old headunit had not and obviously nothing to connect to it. What shall I do? Do I need anything to put in there?

The RCA outputs at the rear of the head unit are there to connect to an amplifier. Most head units have speaker level output through the harness and RCA for connection to an optional amplifier.

If your Mini doesn’t have the Harmon Kardon speaker system with an amp you should be fine by just connecting the new harness

All done. Stereo looks great and work a treat. My only concern is that the fascia adaptor doesn't hold the unit in securely - it doesn't move around by any means but you could pull the unit out through the adaptor if you wanted. Should the unit but secured into the dash by any other means? The fascia removes from the stereo so it doesn't matter too much - and it is tight but I was just wondering.

The facia is not made to hold unit in, most units these days are held in using a cage that comes with the unit.

You place the cage in first and bend some tabs to clamp the cage into the dash. The head unit sides into the cage locking it into the cage with some sort of locking mechanism.

To remove the head unit you use the “keys” supplied with the unit that unlock the locking mechanisms to allow the unit to slide out of the cage.

Got it! Removed everything today and locked the cage in with the tabs. I had to do abit of work to get the stereo to lock in as the fascia adaptor made the whole thing sit slightly forward but I sorted it. Thanks again.
