Amplifier Installation?

I'm wondering what's involved to install an amplifier into my First Generation Cooper S. It's just the standard stereo, which while being pleasing from the factory wouldn't hurt to have a bit more. If someone could explain what's involved in both choosing an amplifier & installing, that would be rather greatful.

Thank you.

If your planning on putting an amplifier to power the standard four speakers it would be wise to upgrade the speakers while your doing it, as well as the head unit as it may not be possible with standard stereo. it would be much easier with an after market head unit.

The positioning of the amplifier all depends on what speakers you want to run from it.

It involves running a power lead with in line fuse from the battery and earthing it also with a wire either to body (usually causes crackle) or better back to the negative on the battery.

A Remote 12v wire needs to run to the amplifier from the stereo (most after market head units have this).

Then you need to run AV cables from the back of the head unit to the amplifier.

Run the speaker wires from the amplifier to the speakers using and hey presto should have louder, better quality music.

hope this helps.

My amp is mounted in the boot as there's less distance for power (Cooper S). I then ran the RCA cables back from the head unit and ran the speaker cables back to an ISO connector to the original harness (saves running new cables to the doors.

Upgrading the speakers is very worthwhile though I only did the fronts - albeit with some high end JL Audio ones.
