Not really a surprise, but I only just noticed this:
The glovebox (but no drivers side bolster) is fitted in this early cut-away drawing!
It took them so long to come up with it, I wondered why, and the fact they design even looks like the one in this illustration makes me wonder even more 'what was the delay?'
I'm not sure when it came online, but it was not an option for several months at least. I was told they were not happy with the design/fit by a few people. Just surprised such an 'ordinary' part of a car should be so delayed.
Perhaps, the shelf was introduced to retain the spirit of the original Mini, but customers wanted a cover, having become used to having them in "ordinary" cars of today?
if you take the glovebox lid off, is the shelf the same as the pre-glove box design or is it complely different? mine came with glovebox so i don't know what it looked like without
I *MUCH* Prefer the shelf!! Its MUCH more useful than the glovebox and silly tiny wee hole on the drivers side that you get now! Its much more reminiscent of the original Mini, and different to other cars on the road, and more useful!
I have all sorts of bits & bobs for my phone stored safely under the steering wheel on the big shelf there - they never fall out due to the heavy rubber mat - and on the passenger side i have a large box of CDs and the handbook and some other stuff which also stays put perfectly!
