Blue Cooper K-40 Radar Detector

I was curious if anyone had opinions about the K-40 radar detctors. I got a pretty good deal on one with assurances that they are the best. I personally had never heard of them. I called K-40 and they told me that my detector retailed for $900.00, in which case I got a REALLY good deal. Anyway its a permanant installation and I am not sure if I should keep, it or sell it and get something that I can move from car to car. Any thoughts or experience with said detector?

If you are ever in Virginia, remember to turn it off, unplug it, and stow it where you can't reach it. They are illegal (it's posted on all major roads as you enter) and the police take great pleasure in prosecuting.

Well fortunately for me I live a little ways from Virginia all though it is one of my favorite states. Thats the beautiful thing about the K-40's. They mount under the car and are wired to what ever location you prefer. They pride themselves on the undetectable nature of the detector. A cop would only be able to find it if he decided to get up under your car and look for it.

I could be wrong (happened once in 1968), but I'm almost certain that it was the K-40 that my dealer, Towson MINI, was installing on their "lot" cars and charging $1500 for. They've stopped doing it because customers were very unhappy with the units, especially those who had owned Valentine 1 units (the best there is) that only cost $400.

The don't have to go crawling under cars. They ride in the patrol car, radar warmed up, but off. They then trigger the radar aimed at cars ahead of them, and pull over the one who's brakelights blipped on when the radar was activated.

Then they carefully look over your interior for radar detectors and the remote indicator for concealed radars. They know lots of tricks, and are hard to fool.

Plus, if you deny having the detector and then they find it, you can get hit with a second ticket for lying to them though I forget what they call the term.

Oh, they can also confiscate the detector.

Be careful in VA.

I had heard that it was BMW's detector of choice, and that is what they intall on the M3's and M5's. I dunno, I paid no where near that amount of money for it.

I agree Valentine 1 is the best out there, hands down!

I think that the K40 is one that can be detected with the police's VG-2 radar detector-detector.
A Valentine One is not.
I hardwired my V1 into the overhead console of X5 and it looks very stealthy. I live in Virginia, where it's illegal -- but the ticket for the detector is much less than a speeding ticket, especially when you consider the insurance costs.

No actually they cannot pick up the K-40 with VG-2.

It _does_ seem to be a very polarizing issue doesn't it?
There are even plenty of folks who feel you shouldn't need one because you shouldn't speed. Boo to that!

Yeah I agree, I simply wanted to know if anyone had any experience with the K-40 and what were thier impressions. At that price tag however, I can't imagine many who could justify that kind of money for a radar detector. And for those who are against us speeders, just make sure they stay out of the passing lane

Quote from radartest.com

I clipped this out of a page on radartest.com.
The site is very heavily Bel-biased, so take it with a grain of salt ....

(We're purposely leaving out K40 whose ancient, overpriced remotes we've savaged in past tests for their utter lack of features, endless false alarms and user-unfriendliness. The company claims to have a new model on hand, the 2000P, but it's little different from the UN700 model that ranked dead last in our past tests and thus, we're not punishing K40 by again mentioning it here.)

Which model did you get?

btw, the BMW dealer here does not sell them (being illegal and all), but when I lived in Raleigh, I remember seeing them for sale at Leith BMW there. And I had a co-worker who had one in his 944. But gosh, that was 17 years ago!!!
