Took Delivery of one of the first Version 2 TomTom SatNav`s for Pocket PC this week from TOTALPDA for £199 + vat.
I`d read the write up on SatNav systems in Computeractive Magazine a couple of weeks ago.
I immediatlly offered to buy a colleagues Compaq 3660 PDA which I knew he had`nt used for over a year for £60 , eventually settling for £85 after lengthy haggling.
-Are PDA`s the most useless gadgets around or what-??? (until now that is}
A search on MINI2 revealed an excellent write up by 3GGG which offered great insights into the fitting of the system.
However, Instead of fitting the device next to the CD player area, where I would have to glance down to get info or change views via tapping of the screen, I decided to fit it in the corner of the Screen like CHD did with his NavMan Device.
The screen is now clearly in view at all times & isnt too much of a distraction.
The antennae sits nicely in the centre of the dash behind that Red LED device -is it a BMW bugging device ??
When I first connected it up, although being told in the instructions that I may have to wait for up to 45 minutes for an Initial one-off satellite Fix, I was pleasently suprised when it got a strong fix on 6 sat`s in under 4 minutes.
The NavMan Device is supposed to have the advantage over the TomTom in that it sits in its own GPS sleeve & therefore has less cables to connect, BUT I found that by Routing the cables in the way I did {no tools or Sweat required} then only the Ipaq Connecting cable is Visible {Same as Navman}.
The TomTom 2 has the added bonus over its predecessor with 3D mapping {roads nearby are wider than those further away} -- a great illusion that actually works.
The female Voice is Clear, Accurate, & do`snt tell me to slow down when Im using my speed for Safety reasons!
Everyday I have used it, it has crashed on me!!
When I Switch off the Engine, It stays Fozen on whatever Screen it was on, until I wait for its internal Batteries to Die, or press that Little RESET button on its Underside.
I then have to go through the whole procedure of reloading the software again via my PC.
I have not had to reload the UK mapping info held on Compact Flash Card on its Expansion sleeve, .. Could this be at fault??
During the reloading phase I am NOT asked again for the Software Serial #, is this normal or does it show a possible cause of the fault??

Any Ideas, Ive never used an Ipaq before so Totally Ignorant of any idiosyncracies / Behavioral Problems.
I just got a navman, but I also have a 3900 ipaq. But in my user manual it says that a 3600 has to be upgraded, if the rom is less than v1.77. I have no idea what that means but maybe the tom tom needs the same for your ipaq ?? Hope this is some help to you.
i have a 3800 series ipaq running tomtom 1 and it can be quite tough to get going sometimes. Often it wont lock onto the satellites or it is complaining about no power when it has plenty.....i think i have a dodgy set of wire...
With regard to the actual software faults it could have something to do with the updates that you can download causing errors on the ipaq - i.e. i just downloaded the latest one last week and now it works but it just gives me voice guidance and no 'red marking' on screen of where im headed! Im now battling with the bloody stylus to get it back somehow but see no option....hmmmmmmmmmm
Gonna try a reinstallation of it all over easter and see what is happening!
OK, So it says I`ve got Version 1.77.
Ive just spent the last 2hours reading up on & actually Re-flashing the ROM in the Pocket PC.
I got the Upgrade from HERE and it now says I`ve got version 1.87 correctly installed.
I reinstalled the TomTom2 software & it asked for new Activation code, which it seems wont be emailed to me from TomTom for a couple of days for security reasons !
Get the patch to TomTom Navigator software 2.02 on their website, that fixes the lockup problems etc.
A very good site for info and help with SatNav equipment is http://www.pocketgps.co.uk
I use NAVMAN on my 3800 series and the documentation says to make sure to turn the system off BEFORE turning the car off. It says the power fluctuation may cause the system to hang....
just a thought
Trust not the heart of a man for whom old clothes, and the Mini, are not venerable!
After Reinitiating / Reloading the Tomtom2 software again, Its finally all working Correctly, & has`nt locked up on me or done anything strange this last week.
The ROM-Flash IPAQ upgrade to Version 1.87 seems to have sorted everything out.
After downloading this to my PC, .. Unzipping it, ... & then Clicking "Setup.exe" ....
A box appears that says "Unpacking APK Files", & then another that says "Processing APK Files" & the Blue progress bar seems to go to around the 25% position .... & then nothing, the box`s dissapear & nothing seems to happen !
The Ipaq is Switched on & mounted on its USB cradle connected to my Pc whilst Activesync is activated.
It still says (on the "ABOUT" menu) that I still have "TomTom Navigator 2.00 (323)"
Could Someone PLEASE explain to me in SIMPLE steps how to install the upgrade properly as I dont know too much about Ipaqs, having just bought this one specifically for the Tomtom2 Setup. As I`ve said, Everything seems to be working OK without this upgrade, But I`d still like to know, for future reference how to do it properly
any one to sell there copy of tomtom 2. I have have ipaq 3700 with the navman jacket i use it every day but found travelling to the centre of London the building block the signal.
If it takes so long to lock end try endinding all running programmes and just run the navigator simon.taylor@carmel-bsl.com
