United-Kingdom Total closure with key fob!?

New minis have total closure on them, but it is only accesible via the key (stick the key in the lock on the driver door, turn and hold, car will lock and all open windows/sun roof will close).

Does anyone know of a way to make the total closure work from the remote?

ANY1 !!!??!??!?!?

I was told by my local dealer it is done by the key fob. I am certainly expecting it on my new Cooper on order

You can open everything via remote (comfort opening), but not close it via remote.

I don't think this will ever be offered for safety reasons. The reason being a child could have their hand or head between the glass and the frame and be trapped while the windows are closing. Lets say for example you leave your child inside your car and go inside and sit down. While you are sitting down you don't realize, but you are accidentially pressing the button and the windows close trapping the child without you knowing. Yes I know far fetched, but it could happen. Probably done for the Americans, you know how they are about safety!

I know Mercedes-Benz gets around this by using and infra red remote system, implying that there is line on sight. I hope this helps

It is offered as standard on BMW's in England, as the last BMW I drove had it. I presume the way they "get around it" is that the windows have a sensor in them so that if theres any amount of force applied (i.e. arm or head) the window will stop going up. For cheapness I've heard the Mini doesn't have these sensors.

Excuse my divviness, but what is comfort opening exactly - it just opens everything all at once? Or does it turn on the air con too?

Off topic, but that automatic preheater thing sounds pretty cool...

I asked for this when my dealer was programming comfort opening. Was told it wasn't possible.

Absolutly spot on I reckon.....

Interestingly, if BMW is worried about people accidentally closing the windows etc, are they highlighting a design fault? What happens if I accidentally activate 'Comfort Opening' in the manner described above, by pressing the remote button accidentally, what happens if its pi55ing down outside and my cars interior gets ruined? Will BMW pay (they have already highlighted the design flaw after all by admitting that you could accidentally close the windows inadvertantly)? Also, what happens if I securly lock my car up then open it accidentally with 'Comfort Opening', and return to find out that someone walking by has stolen the items that I left in my secure car? Whoose to blame then? I am seriously thinking about getting this disabled at the next service.... one of my collegues has already once grabbed the keys to my MCS off my desk, pointed them out the office window and opened up the sunroof and windows for me. Cheers mate, that was funny, especially when I had to leave the office to go and secure my car properly. Always make sure my keys are in my pocket now, not on the desk.... which makes me even more vulnerable to accidental opening!!!

But surely with any remote cental locking you can 'accidentally' open the car and not realise it and be open to theft. I think this would come under consumer vigilance, i.e. it's your responsibility to ensure your car is properly secured.

An absence of sensors on the electric windows is not a design flaw.. it just wasn't in the spec when they sat down and re-designed the Mini.

You have missed the point. Sure, I could unlock any remote car accidentally. But I think your average thief would notice far more a car with windows down/sunroof open than an unlocked car with windows up/sunroof closed?!?!Especially if the weather is bad....

My Golf had comfort closing, but then it had sensors on the windows to make sure you could trap anything in them, the sunroof didn't have a sensor though and that still closed...

I think we're going to have to wait until someone invents a MINI -> Laptop interface so we can program our cars properly.

I don't have any children and take responsibility for my own actions, it's a shame BMW can't accomodate the more sensible among us. Even if we had to sign something to say they wouldn't be responsible if we chopped someones hands off with our closing windows...
