Front speaker install and HK door trims

Hello All,

After months of planning, I'm starting my ICE install. So far I've installed a Nakamichi HU with an iPod hooked up to the Aux-in. I'm really happy with both the sound, and the aesthetics of this setup. I'll take some pictures soon.

My next step is to install JL Audio XR-650 components in the doors. By searching on this forum I've only seen one guy install the XR-650 woofers and the x-overs (which are huge) in the Mini door. From his install, it looks like it will be necessary to open up the aperture in the door card for the woofer to give clearance to the speaker drive unit when in operation. This will remove the attachment points for the heat-stakes that secure the speaker grille. The grille is bonding to the door card instead. This has been done by a few other Mini2ers already.

I'm planning on using the tweeter/door handle trims for the HK sound system, as these have an acoustically improved grille for the tweeter. I'm also considering the HK woofer grilles for the same reason.

I'm wondering if the door cards for the HK system already have bigger apertures for the woofers. From the pictures I've seen of this setup, the diameter of the speaker grilles seems larger, and it doesn't look like they're held on in the same way. If the aperture is bigger I will consider replacing the original door cards. Does anyone have any experience with the HK door cards? It would be even more helpful if someone has pictures of the rear of these.

Thanks to anyone who can help,

Soopacoopa

If I had only seen this yesterday morning, when my door panel was off ...
Here are some pics I took, but only of the speakers - sorry.

Maybe I will have to take the panels off again specially for you

I've just checked the availability of h/k door trims. It's available both for the tweeter and bas in front and for the 6x9 back. The price was quite stunning, $350 (for all)!! But that's in Norway, and everything is expensive her. Post install of h/k is $2070, so I would have checked the price for the door trims at your local dealer. By the way, my MCS did cost $50 000, and it's not even loaded with extras. Bet that!

On the MCOL thread, I put up a pic of the front door grille from inside:

Kvande,

I'm a Brit living in Sweden, and I thought it was expensive here...My MCS was $28,000 loaded...$50,000 is just ridiculous.

I've been upgrading my sound system, and one area I've seen for improvement is to replace the standard (non HK) speaker grilles with the HK variants. The standard grilles are very restrictive, especially for the tweeters. I've already replaced the tweeter grilles, and I wasn't sure if the HK woofer grilles could be ordered seperately from the door trim complete. I also wondered if the trim panel itself had a larger diameter opening for the HK woofer.

Iancull,

That was just the picture I've been looking for! Thanks. It appears that the diameter of the opening for the woofer is the same as the standard door trim panel, so it should be possible to install the HK woofer grille if it is available.

Cheers, Richard

Hi there,
I rang my local dealer to try order some of the HK speaker trims but the guy was completly useless and said i would need the chassy number of a car that already has the HK installed.
I was just wondering if you had the part number maybe?

Thanks
