I've got similar problems with two HK systems (05/04 MCS and 11/06 JCW) that have both lost one channel - front left midrange in one, front right in the other. Have played around with the mode and fade/balance controls - unable to get anything from the spkr. So either each HK amp has lost one channel, or each spkr is shot, or the wiring to each spkr has cracked.
Best case is the wiring has failed, but I dont want to pull the doors apart to check.
I would look at the speakers first. Not sure why you don't want to take off the door panels, they're not that bad to remove. Regardless, it has to be done to correct your problem. I had a speaker fail on an 04, the magnet came loose from it's mount on the basket, so, of course, it had to be replaced.
An amplifier failure, although certainly possible, is the least likely. If an amplifier fails it will take out one channel entirely, not one speaker on that channel. Look at your speakers first.
OK so the swaps proved that both HK DSPs were working fine (that has to be a record yes?) and that the door woofers were duff. Pulled the JCW one out, it looked pristine and the wiring was intact but a battery test showed it was dead. Best guess is the coil winding has shorted out but I'll need to hack off the basket to inspect.
Have replaced it with the working spkr from the MCS to give me a fully functional system in the JCW. Now I need two new woofers to restore the MCS system.
Any suggestions for drop-in replacements other than expensive BMW/HK parts?
There's a bunch of them on ebay......not sure which one you need but worth a look around. prices seem decent.....at least with regard to the BMW parts pricing.
