United-States H/K Audio system

Hello Everyone, just a quick question, Picked up my Pure Silver Cooper on July 1,2003, love it. There is an issue with the speed sensative radio,(H/K) The manual asks you to hold down the note symbol buton until "TONE LIN" appears, then press repeatedly until "SPEED VOLUME 1" appears, this doesn't happen. All I get is "NAVI MIN" to adjust the volume for the navigation system, which I don't have. Also it seems the audio should be capable of higher volume than it is. Any comments on this would be appreciated.

Jim

Ya i have the same problem... actually i dont think its a problem... i dont think we are allowed to adjust the speed senstitive volume... only the dealer can.

And YES i totally think the volume should be able to go higher... I mean its ok loud but seems like my other cars can go soooo loud that the sound distorts but the MINI cant. Maybe they designed it that way.

What exactly does Tone Lin do?

So, it seems newer build H/K systems do not have the speed vol setting, have the nav vol setting (even without nav system) -- but what exactly does tone lin do? It seems to boost the input level, but does this lead to increased distortion... ??

Also, does anyone else find that their right passenger side speaker sounds "muddy"? I cannot tell if it is continued rattle (which the dealer was unable to cure) or if it is truly a speaker problem - but sounds fine with deep bass, so not blown...

Thanks all,

JBlack73

What does "TONE LIN" do , according to the manual, and I tried it. It resets all your tone settings at the same time. For example your base and treble settings to the middle, or linear. Balance and fade also return to the middle. When in "TONE LIN" press OK and it resets them.

The H/K system control the level of distortion closely about 1% THD I believe. This means the H/K system will not allow itself to distort due to the smarts (dsp) in the H/K amp. Other systems may let the audio distort.

The speed volume part, I don't think even the dealer can change it. For a well designed system the user should not notice it's operation.

I think you'll find it's louder than the normal system - just a lot higher quality so it doesn't hurt your ears at ballistic volume

My H?K distorts very easily, anyone else?

I am having some problems with my the H/K in my new MCS. It seems to distort very easily. Now, I like to listen to my music pretty loudly (I do mostly highway driving). But I don't listen to *that* loudly. My Passat stereo never distorted at this volume. I was listening to the new Barenaked Ladies and it distorts all over the place. At least that is what I think it is. The speakers also rattle slightly. Could that be causing it? I don't think so though because I put my ear right up to it and it just sounds like the bottom two speakers in the front of the car just can't handle any volume. It isn't on every song. Just some in particular. I am wondering if there is a particular frequency that it just can't handle.

So can others let me know if they have the same problem or maybe I just have some defective speakers or something.

Also my CD player skips quite a bit. Mostly when I am on the highway. Anyone else?

Thanks! That is my only problem with the car so far. Otherwise I love it!

BTW, it isn't my deep heavy bass in back that is distorting. It is the front bottom two speakers.

If you can't get your HK audio to get very loud, try bringing the bass level down closer to the middle. I had mine all the way up, and couldn't get anything to play very loud.

My bass is already less than half way. Probably about a quarter. It isn't that I am listening to really bass heavy music (mostly just regular pop music). It does it on almost any CD on some songs. Could it be that my speakers are touching the grills or something? I have read other people here who can turn theirs all the way up without getting any distortion. I don't have mine up all the way, just a bit louder than average maybe.

Mp3?

I get my '04 MCS JCW in about two weeks. I also got the HK upgrade (I've had some of their home equipment and it was OUTSTANDING).

A little off topic but...can anyone confirm the rumor the HK will play MP3 CDs?

I must know...if my ride home will be 20 songs or 150.

Now this is fun:

Indeed GMINI03! Is there a switch, dial, pot,... And by the way, where is the amp located?
