Oops, how slack of me, I've had my pool ball shifer for a few weeks now and haven't posted the results in this thread.

At first it took me a while to get used to the new knob as it sits a fraction higher than OEM, but now it doesn't bother me one bit. I love how it brightens up the cabin and how smooth it feels too!

This Whalen for my 2006 MCC has an overall bead-blasted finish, with a brushed ring portion for highlight. Bead-blasted finish is ideal for those of us who don't want a shiny knob, and brushing adds an understated accent. I debated between brushing the shift pattern circle area vs a brushed surrounding ring. I went with the ring, but a brushed circle should also look great. Thanks Doug for your fine work!

I painted the shift pattern using the technique suggested by jimz68 at NAM (thanks Jim): paint the shift pattern with an automotive touchup pen, then lightly wipe with acetone.

And another - like minigolf's.

If anyone is unclear on how to fill the design with black or color, it's easy:

Paint the engraving and the area around it with an enamel or other solvent-based paint. Enamel or almost any spray paint will do.

I used a q-tip and some Krylon spray paint that I sprayed on a sheet of newpaper to make a tiny puddle. It doesn't matter how sloppy a job you do, as you are going to remove the excess after the paint has dried.

Let it dry overnight. The paint will shrink into the engraving as it dries. To completely fill the engraving when done, use several coats and let them dry thoroughly.

When dry, use a smooth-surfaced rag, like an old shirt, and dampen it with the appropriate paint solvent - don't thoroughly wet the rag, as all you want to do is wipe off the excess paint from the surface of the knob, without getting the paint in the lines wet and wicking it out of the engraving.
