Should we really have a locking glovebox?

Never given this much thought, but do you think it would be better to have a glovebox with a lock/key, rather than the current one, even if that meant the handle didn't look quite so cool?

Someone (aren't passengers useful) thought it was bad it didn't have one, but it doesn't really bother me.

Yes! even my fiesta had this....

I'd had liked to of locked my travel documents in the glovebox when I went abroad last month... made me feel a little uneasy having the V5, passport and all that just lying around in the car...

I'm not fussed TBH. Theives can break into one in seconds so what's the point
Valuables should never be left in the car especially V5s, passports, tavel documents etc
If they get nicked it serves you right TBH

MINI, RX8 and MX5 - Done those............. It's now TTime

When I had one on my older cars I never locked it, and I figured if someone's in my car, they'll have no trouble getting in the glovebox anyway!

definately. i use my locking glove box all the time.

someone broke in to my BMW in philadelphia and tried to steal the stereo, but they didn't get into the glove box (where the faceplate was)

i think this is a great idea and perhaps the lock could be hidden on the side of the center console so it didn't mess with the design.

It think it would be handy, might as well have it to keep people in the car out of it at times also !

How about a power lock, like the doors?

I like the idea. Our Saturn LW200 (think Opel [edit]Vectra saloon) has one and you get three keys with the car, two regular and one valet that will open the door and works in the ignition but doesn't open the glove box or the trunk/boot. Since it is a wagon/saloon the only really lockable place is the glove box. The cargo area has a tonneau (sp?) cover but that isn't very sturdy.

All that said, I can't ever remember locking the glove box so obviously I haven't missed it in the MINI....

I personally wouldn't use it. A locked box would tell a thief that there might be something valuable in there and just encourage him to break it open.

absolutely of no use to me ... the only time I could conceive of it being useful is for cars that had the trunk and glovebox on their own key, that way if you sent you car in for service you could give the access to the car but not you valuable in the truck or glovebox.

A. the MINI doesn't have a trunk
B. I would not want a 2nd key just for the glovebox.

No need. However one with a latch that can be adjusted might be good as I read much about them falling open.

Ahhh, convertable. Now that's a different story. Yes, lock on glovebox for that.

I would use the glove box to put things out of sight, however, it is unlikely that I would lock it

Imagine you need to get something out, pull over, and have to look for the keys in order to unlock it
