the best ipod mounting ever

have any of you seen this?! this guy is amazing! http://tunertricks.com/ipod.html

i ordered an extra console platform (cupholder, stick, and mirror control base plastic part) to try and make my own. that way there are no plugs to connect, just drop the ipod in the dock and drive away.

I actually have something similar to this already built. It is a custom built iPod dock that fits neatly in one of the cupholders and requires only very minor modification to the center console. It is being molded this week so that i can make duplicates. i have a couple of photos of the 'prototype' and i should be able to post some better ones later this week

im not convinced on that design. too many vibrations may be transferred from the chassis straight throught the IPOD docking interface. If you use a bracket or clamp you get a form of indirect dampening. I wonder how long it will be before you end up damaging the interface. i like the ash tray version that slides out of the front facia. the chrome one does look pretty spiffy too.

Pretty slick rigging, although one of the reasons I really like my ProClip mount is the ability of the passenger to tilt the iPod their direction to operate it. With this, its in place; pulling it out to change songs or playlists stops your music.

azimmerm,
i be very interested to hear more about your version, it would definately help me with the process to create and mold mine. any details and photos you can share would be very helpful.
i thought about just making a dock that fit in the cupholder but i am also interested in integrating my phone mount and new cupholders so i decided to order a new console and start brainstorming.
thanks in advance,
averyocooper

Talking My custom iPod dock

okay, here it is, finally.

this is a custom built i-pod dock mounted in the cupholder. it is hooked up to a dension ice-link giving me track and volume control through the steering wheel. all of the wiring is hidden beneath the trim and is not visable at any point. i wish i had an anthracite paint to make it look completely original, but after months of looking i could not find it.

anyway, enjoy!

Very clever Andrew, looks really nice. I need to come up with something for my install - I had the Dension cradle mounted high in the boot to keep the iPod out of sight, but I really don't like taking it out of the Vaja case all the time. The simplest solution I've come up with is to wait for the Dension dock cable that's being released at the end of the month and putting it in the glovebox. There's a perfect spot in the upper left corner of the glovebox organizer to keep it from moving around.

That's something else you may want to consider if you're going to build these for other people - the Dension dock cable should be compatible with the iPod dock. That means you could just build one model using the standard iPod dock and then use the correct cable.

thanks for the kind words avery and curt. i have a few ideas on how to improve this, but the parts aren't readily available Apple is pretty tight lipped with their info, and the connectors are proprietary

I've been told the Dension version of this cable will have the locking tabs. It shouldn't be too hard to modify the connector to either remove the tabs completely or make them permanently retracted. A simple cable tie around the connector to hold the tabs in would suffice. As far as the docking station goes, you could have people send you a dock to modify and charge for your modification services.

I wonder if Tunertricks is working on anything for the MINI?

I need help!

I've got a new ipod mini and i want to connect it to my CD BOOST stereo, the obvious way is the ICE Link. However, I dont really like the thought of having the ipod in a cradle on the side of the stereo neither do i want it to be resting on the parcel shelf. But, i DO like azimmerm's idea a few posts ago - does anyone know how to create this or have any ideas?

I've got easy access to chemicals / resins and professional paint - i just need instructions!
