Navman PIN

I am seriously considering one of these:

navman pin

It has just been released and is basically an IPAQ with a built in satellite receiver running Navman software (under Windows Mobile)

anybody used one yet?

not used it but did a lot of looking at it and thinking about one. what puts me off is the memory card requirements for example. to get the european coverage u have to load full map tiles. see below.

Road and street level maps are provided for England and Wales (4 files

> totalling 98.1mb)

> France (7 files totalling 295.6mb)

> Germany (19 files totalling 285.6mb)

> Italy (5 files totalling 247.5mb)

> Belgium (34.1mb),

> Luxembourg (3.2mb)

> Austria (71.5mb)

> Switzerland (33.8mb)

>

> 1030.4 MB total.

U cant just load 50 miles either side of your expected route and create a tunnel for travel on the maps.

So basically. if u intend to use it outside the UK then u will need access to a PC to upload the maps or some big memory cards. i think the basic card supplied is 128mb with the unit.

mmc cards are cheap though - say, £30 for 128MB.

i agree but your still not going to get a decent size part of europe on a single card. it means fiddling around, swapping cards, resetting route etc.

if i had the money and need for GPS nav system i would get the Garmin full europe model with the 2gb microdrive. rrp 1k

I have a Palm T3 running Tom Tom.

You get street maps for UK and the programme ready loaded on an SD card - you just pulg it in and go.

All of Europe (well West Europe) and the UK detailed maps down to house numbers and the programme come on a CD and will fit on a 256 KB card. It is only major roads in Europe but I have managed to find road junctions to within 200m of all the Hotels on the Stelvio or Bust Run (as an example).

You need a card reader to load the maps - well, you dont need one but it takes all day to uplaod it if you dont.

I was a bit dissapointed with the Europe maps at first. As it says on the can, it is major roads of Europe. Virtually no town names are displayed although you can search destinations.

I was really amazed to be able to work out the locations of our run hotels. I just found them on www.viamichelin.com, searched on Tom Tom and entered the location as a favourite. You cant enter exact addresses as you can with the UK map, just the junctions of major roads so you do need to know where you are going and do a bit of homework before you go.

I suspect that the Tom Tom for the Pocket PC will work the same although the file sizes may be much bigger. The Palm ones fit on a 256 MB card plus a whole load of games
