Harmon Kardon

Hi all,is it possible from my dealer to fit the Harmon Kardon Hi-Fi speaker system as an aftermarket extra?

I have the Boost head unit.

If so any ideas on costs?

Cheers

I have heard it is possible but it would cost about £750 I think.

If I remember correctly, it would cost a fortune to fit the Harman Kardon system after the car has been manufactured. A better (IMO) and cheaper alternative would be to get a good powerful headunit (such as an Alpine with a 4*60W output) and some decent speakers. This is the route I took, and the sound is amazing, although I can't compare it to the Harman Kardon as I've never heard it.

Harmon Kardon is Ok for the £350 or whatever it is you Pay for it-I have it, but I miss changing the Head unit. So if I were in your Position do what Sebby said and go aftermarket-For the money you will get some decent I.C.E

I was speaking to a store in Bangor, Northern Ireland today called IceMan (If you wish to contact them) and apparently he says there is no problem changing the headunit in a car fitted with HK, he has done many 7 series BMWs, says it's the same thing, just have to wire it differently (I don't know much about ICE)

He says he can get even Sony's working with it?

The Mini HK is different than the BMW HK. I would like to see the proof of that.

Go for aftermarket -- it will be cheaper at this point and likely sound better. The H/K system is not just the headunit and speakers -- what gives it the H/K sound are the H/K amp and special wiring. And installing all of that will require basically disassemlbing the interior of your car (door panels, back seat, etc.). As long as you are going to all that trouble, may as well get a custom aftermarket system that you can pick yourself.

NOTE: I went the "dumb" route and had the H/K system, which my hubby ripped out 6 weeks later for a totally new aftermarket system. I had assumed my electronics wizard hubby would mod my system and tweak it, but he decided that was a waste of time and that aftermarket was better... I have to admit that my new system (Eclipse headunit, Alpine speakers, JL Audio amp) sounds MUCH better (cleaner, clearer) than my H/K system.

Good luck!

Mike,

You say you would like proof that he could get the Mini HK to work, you also had said to me that you could get the Sony 1000 to work with HK?

Thanks,
Matt

H+K is good for the £350-But if you are really into your ICE-It's not for you-I like it as you get decent sound without the need for Sub/Amp etc.

Matt - as far as I know me & one person across the atlantic are the only people in the world who have the module that willl make an aftermarket radio work with the HK amp. And that was only as on Monday this week.

Thanks Mike,

Looks like I'll be in touch when I decide to change HU, I have total faith that you are correct, you should phone IceMan, Bangor and quiz them!? They were so patronising when I asked them about it!!! "Of course we can fit it"!
