You need to listen to the sound and recognize the mode ... certain modes (eg: instrumental) are very easy to recognize to then you know where "in the list" you are.
In truth, I generally don't change the mode once I have selected one I like - and actually I am not even certain what mode I am currently listening in, but I like it.
You can simply press the button repeatedly till you get a good sound, and leave it at that - maybe it does not even matter which "mode" is selected, so long as you like the result?
Feedback - displays, or even LEDs - would add significantly to cost and complexity of installation. As Mikey says, you can order a version with no button and no way to change the "mode" - it is set up the way it will always be. Most aftermarket amps are this way, relying only on the head unit controls ...

The HK sound system for the MINI has an amplifier that is controlled digitally by the stock head unit. If you remove the head unit the HK amp stops working.
The adapter sends the necessary wake-up/setup I-bus codes to amp allowing you to install an aftermarket head unit.
