The best I've heard is Genesis although I can't remember what they were called but I think
they were in the £450 area. I've bought Focal Polyglass 165V2 for about £180. There are
just so many speakers out there that you'd be better off asking for good dealers then going
there with a budget and trusting them to demo their top 3 or 4. What part of the country do
you live in?

Some people are like a Slinky ........ not really good for anything, but you still can't help
but smile when you shove them down the stairs

Live near liverpool, just been looking at some clarion 1751s, they seem quite good an mikeymini recommends them too, might go with these.

I'd second the 6.5" Focals but if you are getting "quality" speakers get a decent amp to run them and nail all those rattles and vibrations in the doors.

As for spacers I made mine out of sandwiching different thicknesses of MDF to get the right depth. The Focals are still a tight fit though so I had to remove the grilles and remove all the excess card and plastic around the it. Then just Super Glued it back on. Wouldn't know it now.

I had a listen at the Focals, not bad but went another step up with a set of Dynaudio 220 Mk2's, not much change out of £500 for the pair, (but shop around!) It was those or MB Quart but all the guys who worked at my dealers had put Dynaudio in their own cars after hearing so many different speakers. I didn't get 16.5cm speakers, when you start getting towards the top end of the market, some of the magnets that drive the speakers are so huge that you can run into problems if you want to use the standard mounting locations. Mine are about 13cm, but the magnets are about the same diameter as well, which is the speaker equivalent of putting a huge engine in a small car. I'm planning to compete in sound quality competitions pretty soon, so you get an idea of what it's like.
