stock radio with new component speakers?

Anybody tried replacing stock speakers with new component ones? But leave the stock head unit intact? How easy was the wiring?

yup....i've '04 MC w/stock HU...replaced the fronts with the efficient Infinity 6002si Shallow Mount 6 1/2" coaxial (not the components).....they by definition have the tweeter in the middle, but I also left the lil 1" stock tweeters in place and connected..the wiring was nothing, just unplugged the stock speaker and plugged in the new coaxial....the stock HU is very weak so the speakers have to be as efficient as you can find....plus you need a spacer of about 3/4"....end result is that the sound now is very clear, brilliant but not harsh and has very good soundstaging, and loud enough for my liking....was going to replace the rears but decided against it as I was satisfied by just doing the front

I'm happy with everything of Mini but the speakers

Time to look for some efficient speakers. Thanks for your reply!
