TMC before Jan 05... My July/Aug build Mini has TMC on the screen, mentions it in the supplementary manual but doesn't work (which I knew from other people on the forum). I thought it was a case of getting a newer version DVD and it would be fine, but the dealership have told me that TMC was only designed to go live on cars supplied from Jan 05. Is this true or does anyone have a pre Jan 05 mini with no tmc problems.... thanks.

so will they give me the dvd free or will they want to charge me for it??? I already tried the "but it says it should work in the supplementary manual...." but didn't get very far. In fact last time I took the car in I pointed out to them I needed the updated dvd and it would be fine but they didn't seem to get my hint.

ooooh interesting. well I'm picking up the car tomorrow so I'll see what happens. So, technically would a dvd from any BMW which has TMC work then? My other half has a 6 series and TMC works on that....

Firstly, you need to make sure you have the new CD BOOST head unit. It's the one that plays MP3 CD's with the fat stumpy on/off button instead of the longer, thinner one that doesn't play MP3 CD's. If you don't have that then you don't have the head unit compatible with TMC. The first facelift and convertibles don't have the correct head unit. I believe it was Jan '05 builds on that got the newer head unit, along with a price increase to cover the cost of supplying the DVD disc. TMC was never advertised as part of the nav package until the price increase. I'd imagine that the TMC booklet in the owner packs of the early facelift/convertibles was supplied in error. There was also no official ruling as to discount or free DVD discs.

Unfortunately you need a new head unit (about £400) and a DVD disc (about £200). You may be able to pick up a head unit from the for sale forum (or ebay). One was for sale a few weeks ago and I was surprised it took ages to sell-I suspect the seller did not know how valuable it was, of course you could also sell your head unit and the difference would be a small cost. You can get DVD's quite cheap on ebay which claim to be original discs or download one from a P2P network. The head unit should have been supplied with all 05 spec cars because although TMC was not advertised as a feature an MP3 CD was. As far as I know no version of the sat nav CD supports TMC.
