DIY Ipod Ice link fitting

Hi,

Have recently received my icelink plus version 2.2 and wondering whether to attempt fitting myself. I understand the main problem is getting the head unit out which involves removing the down tubes on the dash?
In the DIY section on this site it is suggested you can fit an aux lead to the head unit on a left hand drive car without removing the head unit, as I presume both leads plug into the same place I wondered if this would work on a right hand drive car for the icelink (I notice the 17 pin plug is rather bulky)?
I'd also appreciate some guidance on whether it's necessary to disconnect the car battery to fit the icelink (the instructions recommend this) and if I do disconnect whether my Boost head unit will need a radiocode to work again (I note none was suppliedwith the car) + any other effects battery disconnection might have on remote alarm, central locking etc.

Any guidance gratefully received.

Pull the head unit. Its really easier than it looks. Disconnect the battery since you will be doing electric stuff and you never know what you may touch that might short circuit. No you won't need the radio code. If you are feeling brave, then just undo the fuse to the radio. But one or the other needs to be done to make the HU reset and find the cd changer (ie. the icelink.)
Good luck.

Thanks for that- sounds a bit scary but I guess that's what radio thieves do!

Not quite sure how I'd get enough grip on it to pull it out though.

You have to unscrew a few screws in the dash. Then the fours screws on the downtubes. Then pop a section of the dash and ease the downtubes out. Then you can unscrew the radio and slide it out. The whole process is fairly easy, but popping a section of the dash requires more force than you'll feel comfortable using, and getting the IceLink Thru Post and all the connections back in behind the radio so it will slide fuilly back can be awkward. However, I would recommend DIY, as someone will bill you an hour labour for this, and whilst it might take you a whole hour, you'll know how to get in and out if you have issues.

Some people never disconnected anything, radio or battery, according to their posts in the IceLink monster thread!
