replacing door grilles and fitting speakers in their place

Has anyone removed the factory fornt speaker grilles and fitted aftermarket speakers in their place so that the performance speaker grilles and speakers are visible?

if you have done can you post any pictures?
also (I know this sounds daft and you'll sya measure it but i dont have car yet) what size speaker will go in the place of the grille but the screw holes caused by fitting the speaker wont be visible if speakers are converted to standard?

any help whatsoever would be great.

thanks.

p.s. stereo system so far is as follows.

Alpine CDA9853R headunit
2x Rockford Fosgate power series 10" subs (t110d2)
1 pair rockford fosgate punch 6x9s (FRC3369)
1x rockford fosgate 1051s amp for subs
2x Rockford Fosgate 150s amps for front and rear speakers
Rockord Fosgate 1farad power cap with blue led display, blue led's and blue led neon built in.
just need to sort the fornt speakers out ready.

do you have a mini yourself?
I'd be able to figure it out as soon as i get car but want everything ready for when i get it.

could you get a tape measure out and measure the grill for me if you dont mind.

the grill should overlap the door card itself by about 5mm all the way round. to remove the grille i'm guessing it's just glued in a few spots behind so a small drill bit will get that off easily.

I think you are going to blow your Mini up with all that.

You can do 6 1/2" component speakers in the front (anything under 2.5" deep should fit), and 6 1/2" coaxials in the rear.

How do you plan on putting 3 amps and a sub box for 2 10 subs in the back? going to be a ton of manipulating...probably have been better off doing a nice 4 channel amp for the highs and a single channel amp for a single sub in the rear.

6x9's aren't going to fit, unless you plan on cutting up a ton of the plastic in the rear.

Yes 6x9's are already there, i will be mounting rockford fosgate items in their place.

the front speakers are the only ones which are going to be on view so therefore need to be the correct size as the rear ones can be made to fit under the interior trim.

i currently have JL Audio 6.5" midranges installed in the factory locations. according to my installer, a little trimming was needed, nothing major, for the bigger speakers to fit. better put dynamat on the doors if you're gonna upgrade the door speakers

Yes dynamat is a must i used so much of it in my lupo.
the boot door was full of their expanding foarm, i taped up all the holes and just squirted it in. A little bit of a messy job but it improves sound quality and eliminted all rattles.

ah ha. Welcome to the world of Mini strange. The speaker grills are part of the door trim
and not part of the speaker. I doubt if they touch. Removing the grill to put a better looking
one is not so easy as I think it is held in place by adhesive. Plus the new grille won't blend
with the interior. Do what most people do, replace the speaker but leave the grill in place.
My Focals have a 72mm mounting depth and they were a tight squeeze. That's about
2.8 inches so I think the Punch speakers should be fine.

What size are the door speakers?

I have some MB Quarts lying around - if they fit it would at least get them out of the way.

BTW, I've discovered that using the BMW iPod adaptor + iPod means that you can turn up the volume to the point where "Blue Monday" makes your chest vibrate (and is still distortion-free).

Given this - is it really worth the effort of the upgrade?

Door speakers are 5.25" but you can also fit 6.5". Either way you'll need an adapter as well.
I was surprised at the quality of the OEM speakers but some of us must spend spend
spend so I bought Focals as replacements. Now I wish I had spent more on Genesis
Audiophiles .

Ahhh crap I think I bought the wrong speakers off eBay. A/D/S 1688s 6.5" which i wanted to put in the doors (comes with the separate tweeters). Oh well only cost me $80US and I can probably re-sell them for a similar price. I guess I'll have to keep looking. I'm a big fan od A/D/S so i was happy to find these available (they are an older model but still NIB). Crap

don't re-sell them just yet. my Mini has 6.5" midranges in the doors, minor trimming was the trick (according to my installer) check out my door install. had stock tweeters replaced & mid-bass on kick-panels
