H/K Speaker Upgrade

Ok, im having a problem with my h/k speakers blowing. The front ones...... Anyway, the dealer has replaced them, oh, were on like the 6th time. So, i have decided to take matters into my own hands. I do NOT want anything to screw up my sound quality. I want a direct replacement speaker with no extra wiring, or amps, or drilling, or anything, that has the same sound quality, of the H/K speakers, when they are not blown. I want the quality to be better, and for them to be able to withstand what the amp is putting out. Something that the stock speakers obviously cannot do.

Wow, that post sounds kinda demanding. I saw were someone else was looking for the same thing, but back in 03. He/she did not get the answer i wanted.

Soooo...... Can anyone help?????

i am pretty sure bmw matched the speakers correctly to how many watts the amp is putting out. i highly doubt replacing the speakers will fix your problem, especially if it has happened six times already. it sounds like there is something else causing your problem.

time to find that amp and start checking it over. i don't know anything about the amp used in the hk system on the mini, but if there is a gain setting and it is set incorrectly causing clipping at high volume that could very well be your problem.

Hey, how did you run your second amp? Did you have to use speaker level input for it or does the factory HK amp have line level outputs?

I would like to know this too. I was understanding that this was a near impossible task. Also where did you put the amp?

I was not even remotely considering to get HK upgrade in my MINI, because I think the HK unit in my MCoupe pretty much sucks. The mid range speakers in the ceiling blew several times and because HK does stuff different and runs them on 3ohm, no other speakers can replace them "correctly".
An Audio guy who looked at the HK speakers called the cardboard "backing" stuff absolutely cheap and not worthy.
But I guess, to each their own. I am glad you guys love your HK stuff.

I'm willing to bet your HK speakers are not blowing at all. It is a very common issue where the speaker grill and door panels vibrate with HK MINIs. It sounds like a blown speaker. Except it will even happen at lower volumes. If you push on the door panel next to the speaker does it stop? The solution is to simply put some felt between the door panel and the door, as detailed on my site below. Hundreds have done this and the problem has disappeared. The speakers themselves are just fine.
