My turn ... New Roof

Well, I took our car in for its 1st service today. I went down the list of issues to work on; reverse light connection, fuse panel cover, faulty fuel gauge, a weird on time occurrence of blinking gauge lights and bouncing needles and mentioned the roof wear. The marks are noticeable, but not white yet. We have had the car one year and the top has been up and down a lot. The car stays in a garage all day at work as well as when at home.

The car has been there all day and I call around 5 PM to see what the deal was. Well, she told me that they were replacing the top. I figured that I was going to have to fight for that. And I was willing to wait a while since it was not horrible yet. I must say that I am a bit surprised. The only bad thing is that I am driving a Buick LaCrosse as a loaner. A sofa on wheels. Oh well, it is transportation. It could have been a Cavalier. One bad thing about the buick is the speed sensitive volume on the stereo. Crappy. Gets too soft when I slow down. The MINI is much better at that. I could never really notice it. That is how it should work.

Now I wait until tomorrow to hear how it goes. Wish me luck. Should I be happy? ANything that I should make sure that they do? Or don't do?

So far so good. The only thought I have is that the top has some lumps in it over the 'sunroof' section. Like it wasn't stretched all the way side to side. I will see if there is a way to flatten it. A rattle that was above my driver side window has gone away.

Which of our great, DC metro Area dealers is replacing your roof? Mine has no issues since it got replaced and no sign of wear, yet its to cold to take the top down anyways for now.

Howard, it was done at MINI of Sterling. We still have a week to wait before we can put the top down. Not sure why we need to wait, but with snow on the ground and the current freeze we are going through, not a problem.

How long has your new top been on? I hope we don't have new markings ever. They noted adjustment to the bump stops on the work oder along with a part number for some replacement pieces. I hope this does it for good. Ours wasn't too bad, but it was noticeable. I am glad the dealer took a proactive approach.

I had a phone call this morning from my dealer saying the BMW have released the "new new" roof today to sort all the problems out ... so the car is booked in for next thursday... have a new canvas fitted ! hands up who thinks this will be a waste of time ?

the new roof for about 3 weeks now, no rattles or anything. Lemme know when you get the repair forms of the list of work done does it list something like Defect Code #####, and such.

Does this help you out? My guess is that 540105 is the service bulletin number. What a "White Marks Repair" part is, I have no clue.

Yours was a bit more detailed than mine. I notice that my seals were not replaced either. Hmmm. Maybe mine were not bad. Unless it was part of the mounting kit.

Wife's mini convertible has just been in to have the roof mechanism recall "fix". They actually did it whilst it was in getting a new tyre and didn't say they were doing it so she had to wait 2.5 hours - not happy at all.
Anyway she asked them to look at the roof wear. The car was one of the very first delivered and I have been waiting until a proved fix is in place before kicking up a storm. However the garage have just said that BMW state:

1. The roof will only be replaced if there is visible holes, fraying or about to fray.
2. With a blue roof any silvering or flattening is considered acceptable and will not warrant a roof replacement.

I have booked the car in on January 11 for inspection by the BMW engineer. Funny thing is there is an identical mini at work, exactly the same age and colour and it does not show any roof wear at all !!

That doesn't make any sense, why does the colour of the roof make the roof wear acceptable?!

gbcw, welcome to MINI2. Sorry that your first post has to be about a problem. I have heard that the colored roofs do not wear as well. I guess the color fades faster. But I agree that should have nothing to do with the white marks. THe fading would be consistently through out the entire roof. Hopefully things will be better for you. It does not sound as if your dealer is doing the right thing. By the way, how long have you had the car? I had heard previously that the white marks were showing up sooner on the colored roofs. Not sure why either.
