Convertible top wire bow broken

I have an 05 Cooper S convertible. There is, what I am perceiving to be, a "front wire bow" broken and my top gets jammed when going from sunroof to convertible. The rod's hooked end gets pinched in the track. My questions are.

1. What is the function of said "front wire bow"?
2. Do I have to have this for proper functioning of the top?
3. If #2 how do I repair this?
4. If not #2 can I just nip the hooks on the ends and call it a day?

The weather here in NC is finally getting nice enough for the top to be down and I really wanna enjoy it this summer!! Thanks for all of your help with this situation.
