To be fair to MINI I don't think this is as great a problem as it once was. You may well still get feint marks on your roof but nowhere near the wear seen on early cars. My car had a new roof and was adjusted by MINI subsequent to this. Wear now is fairly minimal.

Whilst I still think prospective owners should be aware of the problem I wouldn't get too neurotic about the state of the roof.

Enjoy your MINI!

mine is almost a year old now, will be booking it in soon for its third roof, I hope this one can resolve it, but doubt it I love my MINI don't get me wrong, but the roof wear issue means I doubt I will be able to keep it beyond its warranty like I want to

Oh and my GF's MCC has now on its third roof, and two weeks after it was replaced the marks were back

Its a real shame, as my boss has an A4 cab which is 3 years old and has no sign of the level of wear my MINI has

Mine's in for a new roof in a couple of weeks time.
I bought the car last May, and by June it had the tell tale white marks.
Just hope they get it sorted

My MCC with its navy hood is 2 1/2 months old. its booked in in 2weeks for its first roof. I love the car 2 bits, but this could get a bit on the tedious side.

The dealer described the roof ware in the short time I've had the car, as excessive... to the point where there are white patches about 3 inches in diameter.

There were no problems in changing the roof, and they made it out to be a run of the mill procedure?!? its a pretty big and expensive warranty claime if u ask me...

I still love mt car tho!

I have to say I've given up the idea of a pristine roof. It has white marks, they do look a bit of a mess but they are nowhere near as bad as the marks I had when I I had the roof changed.

I picked up my brand new One C almost a month ago and as you know it rained almost all of May!!! Ive had the roof down under ten times however i am already noticing a hint of roof ware at the hinges.

I think i heard somewhere that the mechanism can be adjusted however does that include the hinge part as they do seem to stick out quite far?

Has anyone else noticed anything with an 06C? Mind is a black hood although i doubt that makes any difference!

New MCS Convertible Purchase Questions

I purchased my new MCS convertible in Richmond, VA 2 weeks ago. After reading this thread of issues regarding W/T of the Mini soft top, it seems that this is somewhat of a common issue. Has anyone discovered a lotion, wax, etc, that provides additional protection -- or possibly, just colors in the impacted areas of the roof?

Also, I noticed in several pics on the site that many Mini convertibles have a wind screen between the front and rear seats. Is this a standard feature or an optional upgrade?

Thx - heinjh01

The windscreen was optional when we got ours, but some have had it as part of the purchase. A bit pricey, but worth it if you travel without rear passengers.

Thumbs up Roof Wear

I have a 2005 model delivered OCT 2004); black top - no noticeable wear to canvas or rear glass BUT top open/close mechanism is a major problem; motor grinds but top does not open. Now in the shop for repairs.
Dealer just called; top will require a totally new mechanism (motor/cables/etc). Apparently MINI issued a "fix" for cable problems but new cables did not "fix' my problem - LIve in Florida so top is opened/closed frequently- no hint of trouble outside the mechanism was noisy from Day 1 -- but always worked -perhaps the 'noise' was a hint but owners' manuals do not reflect this in troubleshooting section.
A GREAT FUN CAR for all seasons here!

The TSB pertains to cars prior to a certain period in 2005 (Feb).

There are service actions in place for vehicles that have this problem occurring, but measures have been implemented to rectify this at production already.

In essence, the problem is sorted on all new cabs.

Hey Timmee...wwhat constitutes a "new" cab?
Mine rolled off the line May 3. So far I have ot noticed wear, and it's up & down all the time.

And re: the TSB - are you referring to the mechanism that cwiecking mentions in the previous thread or to the roof wear?

Thanks for the info!

New Roof for our Cooper Convertible next week

Jubee’s convertible goes in next week to have a hood replacement. Just after we bought the car we noticed that the hem around the window aperture had started to fray slightly. When we pointed this out to Barons Mini they just said “No problem, we’ve changed hoods under warranty for less!” So a good no quibble warranty claim and we are a satisfied customer . Lets hope the new hood lasts, I know some convertible owners who have had several replacements but rumour has it that the latest batches of hoods have been improved and are less susceptible to wear damage. Anyone who can confirm this?

Getting it’s first service at the same time.
