we used to have a Porsche carrera with a black conv top, every time we went to the carwash it came back with red ad blue fibers (from their cloth). WE purchase black hand towels that we took with us and had them use on the top. I plan on doing the same when my Mini comes next week.

So many people told me not to take a convertible through a car wash - is that why? Are there any other risks? I wasn't ever sure so I washed mine by hand.... But *if* everything works out and I have my MCC back (or another after MCC) after insurance reports on my wreck, I'd like the option of pulling through one to clean off salt and other destructive grime on COLD winter days. Since I'll be living in the snowy mountains where the wind chill often hits close to 0 degrees F in the winter, washing outside will probably not be a very appealing option at times

A good coat of Raggtop will keep anything off your roof - birdie doo-doo flicks right off, water beads, and so their lint would shoot right off with a spray of water. I don't take my MINI through car washes, still doing the hand wash bit. But maybe try requesting that they not rub your top with their cloths, but rather blot it (of course, assuming you've put that Raggtop on your roof). http://www.mini2.com/forum/showthrea...hlight=raggtop

The biggest problem with auto washes are the automatic brushes they use (especially the side ones) are very rough on clear coats, and I have heard horror stories from people who have used them long-term. I cleaned mine for the first time tonight (just picked it up Wednesday) and was happily surprised how quickly it is cleaned (being so small makes it speedy!) I too am having issues with lint on the roof...will try the tape roller thing.

I can vouch for the Raggtop. I bought it online and devoted one afternoon a couple of weeks ago to masking off the car and putting it on. Put on three coats, waited about 20 minutes in between (it was a warm sunny day). The water beads up like little balls of mercury on the roof now, and runs right off! Great stuff!! 2005 MCSC

My washing mitt leaves lots of curly yellow fibers around the edges of my hood. I dont really wash the hood usually, i'm too scared it'll fade or something silly like that. At most I'll wash the rear window then just give it a quick rince off with the hose. they do the same thing at the hand car wash that I use when I'm too lazy to do it myself. (or when I want the attention of the ladies that hang around the carwash )
