Mcs -> Rx8

Well I have done it
I have just traded in my MCS for an RX8, pick it up on the 5th Sept

I will be sad to see the MCS go, it has been a great car, but seriously let down by the dealer.
Hoping for better luck with the dealer this time. Oh, and a friendly petrol station

Which Roxy?

Which version did you go for? Am liking ther look of the Prodrive Special, but as Rakey says, these little beasts have a rep for drinking both oil and petrol.

Good luck with it, hope you have a blast in it, and they sound great too.

I am looking to replace my mini cooper s too.

I was considering an RX8 but was put of by the poor fuel consumption and that the old RX7 engine had such a poor life expectancy.

Let us know how you get on with it although i may have changed the S by then

The RX8 is very nice, my boss at work has a blue one and its fast and sound amazing.

One thing they drink oil and the fuel consuption make the Works MINI look good.

I saw this little snippet on Autoblog just the other day about the RX8 recall which might be of interest to you.

Plenty of fuel but no oil consumption on my JCW.

I seriously looked at the RX8 when I was selling my Cooper and I still like the look of them, but after driving one it was just missing something compaired to a MINI. Just my opinion.

Good luck with your purchase, I'm sure you will enjoy it as they are a good car.

I have gone for the 231bhp with Leather interior.
Going on the oil consumption of members of the owners club, most seem to get around 1000-1500 miles per litre of oil, so with my annual mileage of around 6000, it is not really a biggy for me.
I think that the rotary engine is much improved than that of the old RX7. Many owners have clocked up a lot of miles in them, and I believe Mazda say 150k+
There is a bit of a thing going on at the moment, mainly with American owners, and it is rumoured to have something to do with the type of oil used in them. I believe in America mazda are increasing the warranty on the engine to 5yrs, and are checking them, and replacing as necessary.
As with all innovative designs there are always some problems.
Hitting 9500rpm helps you forget any issues anyway
Mini's do seem to have the best group on the Forum though, although the RX8 forum has helpful members, its just a bit quieter than Mini2.
I will keep monitoring the Mini forums though.

Congrats

I once borrowed an RX7 from a work mate, he took my Audi Coupe and I took his Roxy for the weekend.

Absolutely the most fun I have ever had on the A13 at 3am on a Thursday morning. A blindingly quick little car - and it felt so sorted. Not driven the 8, but if it is anything like the 7 it'll be awesome.

Are there any mods aimed at increasing torque?

Cheers
S

The torque is 208Nm which is not far off the 220Nm of the MCS

On the 7 oil was pumped into the carb to lubricate the rotor tips hence the high oil consumption. I'm guessing the 8 will have a similar system to keep the tips lubed?

There is a new oil delivery system for lubricating the rotor tips, and it is supposed to use less than half the oil that whas required in the RX7

True, but the torque doesn't peak until 5,500 rpm whereas a Cooper S is lighter (better torque per weight) and peaks about 1,500 rpm earlier so it feels much more different than the figures suggest. Personally, I really like the RX8 but the lack of torque is what put me off it. Good luck with the new motor though
