Mini Cooper S or John Cooper Works Competition Edition

Hi,

Last week, while I was in for service on my 550i, I had a great discussion with my salesman and ended buying a brand new MCS chili Red Rally edition.

Back home, I tough about that nice JCW in chili red #34 of 64 Competition edition that the salesman showed me and I became unsure if I did made the right choice.

The problem is that I don't know if the extra (8000$ CAD) is worth the expense. I know some MCS with mods will be better or equal to a JCW, but then, how much money needs to be invested VS relability VS warranty VS resale value of a JCW ? Of course, we all like power and a little more is always welcome, but at what price and sacrifice... ?

What I don't like about the JCW is the fact that there is no cruise control...

I would greatly appreciate if some of you with more knowledge can comment on this concern.

This must be specific to that model as I have it on my JCW S? Does it have the multi function steering wheel as it comes with that.

Hi,

The one I looked at (#34 of 64 Competition Edition) does not have the multi function wheel...

Was this not the special edition created for the Canadian market to make up for the fact that the Works GP never got sold there.....?

Cruise control is nice to have, but the type of car you are buying isn't really a comparison to your 550i cruiser - its more of a sporty car. i never used the cruise control on my Works Mini, but use it all the time on my big audi...

This is a little off topic but can you tell me if the Recaro seats are available in Canada? I am not sure if they were on the LTD edition JCW or not or if they are an option to the normal MCS. I would appreciate your help. Thanks Steve

Hi Steve,

The Recaro are not part of the equipment list at my best knowledge and is not an option as well.

Here are a couple of links to threads in the Canadian forum discussing the JCW Competition Edition;

Personally I think the JCW CE is a fantastic deal, considering the cost of the equipment it features would normally be in excess of $15,000 if added individually. Yes, going aftermarket you may achieve as good as, or better, performance than the JCW set-up, but as you point out there is the warranty question. Also, if there is one thing that people seem to agree on it is that the JCW feels to be the most 'balanced' and even,being conceived as a complete performance upgrade.

There is a retrofit kit available, if you must have the cruise. I think I've engaged mine once in the year I have owned my JCW, and even then I couldn't help but use the accellerator constantly

No Steve, unfortunately we don't get the Recaro's either, due to the absence of the side airbags. We don't have to have them in Canada, but I believe on your side of the border some states require them (?) Up here we are to small of a market to get our own spec vehicles
