Exhaust Popping

I have a bit of an odd question but has anybody else found that some days their mcs pops like crazy and other days its silent and doesn’t ever pop when they want it to?

Does anybody know what it is that causes it to pop more, I am guessing it might be petrol related and the pre and post burning of the petrol before it ignites, but the only way i have arrived at this conclusion is because it pops more when I use 95 ron fuels (but this could be a red herring)

I love the popping, much better than listening to a cd on a country lane, its the best sounding car on the road in my opinion!

Unburnt fuel in the exhaust gasses 'exploding' in the hot exhaust.

Well granted it is a nice sound, and I turned the surround sound right up for that, and yes it does 0-60 in 4.5seconds, but i still prefer the Mini

Are you running your S with the standard paper air filter fitted? If so the pops will decrease with the amount of crap the filter catches. Mine pops like a trooper with just a high airflow KnN replacement filter. Marvellous!!

Yes I am, and yeah it makes perfect sense, if I just put a K&N panel replacement filter in will that make it pop more on demand?

I would imagine it will sound slightly throatier too

A pannel filter will make your CooperS pop more, but it wont sound throatier..... instead the supercharger wine will become louder!!!

I find my MCS pops a hell of a lot more in cold weather, than it does in warmer weather. Also, being a pre-05, my car didn't tend to pop so much until I fitted my Milltek cat-back and uploaded the MTH Tuner file.

I often drive around with my back seats folded down so the popping is a bit louder in the cabin.

Thanks for all the info guys.

From what i can gather then: -

Better filter + a cold day with a warm engine = more popping

Nice one

Have been down your neck of the woods recently MiniPetrolHead, had a few day's work near Golden Cross.

Driving down with my (much older) mate in the car we came to Cuilfail Tunnel, while he was waffling on I wound down the windows & dropped the old girl down a cog, 'what you doing' say's mate, I said to him just listen to this as we went through the tunnel. Induction roar from CAI, supercharger whine then POP POP POP POP on the overrun

Now when we go any where near a tunnel or bridge he says 'windows down' without any prompting at all I've converted a Jaguar driver

You should have said something, because me and john would have gone over to the golden cross pub to meet up with you for a drink! (that way we could have had a look round your car aswell)

Johns MCS has now had a schrik cam and MiniSpeed big valve cylinder head put on it!!!! it really is a rapid machine!!
