Bike Rack

I have a question. Does anyone know where I can get a decent mountain bike rack for my MCS? I've had a quick look round but no luck, I'm worried about damaging the paintwork and also my bike as it is a very valuable piece of machinery that has cost me ££££'s!.

Do a search, right here on MINI2 for "Saris Bones". I have the Saris Bones 2-Bike rack, and it fits a MCS with the purchase of two "Graber Hatch Hugger" kits. Apparently, the Saris rack is available in the UK. At this time, Saris has not tested the rack for an adequate fit, so buyer beware.

But I have used it, with one bike on it, for a short-haul, and it seemed quite sturdy. I would expect that Saris revises their fit-guide as soon as they get a MINI to test-fit.

Glad to help. Really, it's a great little rack. We bought it, because it was the only thing that would fit a Pontiac Sunfire. Turns out the thing fits the new car (Wow) and the fit guide is nuts. VW Hippy Van, New Beetle, Miata, Minivans, Audi TT, you name it.

I went with the MINI roof mounted rack. There's a whole story about how those idiot at the dealership messed up my roof if you look under dealership feedback.

http://www.mini2.com/forum/showthrea...threadid=14970

It cost me $400 with installation. That doesn't include the bike support attachment yet. I actually got my dealership to give me the bike and snowboard attachment for free as a result of them drilling a hole in my roof.

Does the bike attachment kit from MINI carry one bike or two? I am seriously thinking about getting the factory rack installed on my MCS when it arrives any day now.

Bike Rack

See the photos in my gallery of how I attached a couple of locking fork mount bike holders to the MINI rack.
Also some other discussion on this in the Thule Box thread about two weeks ago.

FYI,

Yakima racks are a very high quality unit and "are in the process of developing a rack." I say that because their design facilty is local and they borrowed a mini from a friend recently to make the measurements and figure out how to make it work. You might contact them directly but I do not have any idea of a time-line for production.

Yakima MINI racks?

Wow. That's great news. I've had great luck with their stuff for many years. There were several posts a few months ago wth correspondence from Yakima indicating that they were not going to make a rack for the MINI.

Lets hope for an alternative to the expensive, but high quality MINI load bars.

I use a Hollywood Eco Bike rack on the back of my Cooper S - at least 3 times a week - it fits really well and can carry 3 mountain bikes. Its also really simple and takes about 2 mins to fit and seconds to remove.
They cost around £50 and should be available at your local bike shop... If not you can buy it from one of my bike shops. www.dirtdreams.com
The only mod I had to make to the racks top hooks was to fit white duck tape over the black rubber - so as not to leave black marks on my white roof.
Other issues with boot mounted racks are ensuring handlebars/brake levers of the inner most bike don't scratch your roof - a few strategically placed pieces of cardboard solve this problem.
