I'm with Tigger, I just bought an 04 plate S (wife still has the cooper) and I dont care about the RFL, its part of running a car, the smile on my face is worth it when I hear the S/C whine

Yep me too. I would pay £500 a year to keep the S. I would probably groan and grumble to the poor old dear behind the post office counter and get moody with the wife coz i have no beer tokens for a couple of months but hey you can't put a price on S-MILES.

How does road tax work?....if you still have say 5 months remaining by next February and there will be a bike hike as of March, can you renew it to 12 months in February?....or can it only be done in 6 month chunks?

Before you judge a man walk a mile in his shoes, after that who cares? your a mile away and you have his shoes.

You could go to a post office with your V5C, MOT (if over 3 years old) and Insurance Cert, take out tax for 12 months in Feb, then send your old tax disc back to the DVLA for a refund

How old is the S?

The reason I ask is on the later ones Mini tweeked it, and it outputs 199g/km rather than 207g/km.

It may only be 8g, but it's enough to put it a band lower come next march, £260 then £270 in 2010 I believe.

you wont be able to do this as the system is computerised and the PO will not be able to issue you a tax disc, its all linked, the only way you could do this is by SORNing your car for a month then retaxing for a year.

You can at a PO, my car was still showing as taxed when I bought it, but the dealer put 6 months tax on it.

You can't do it online without making it SORN first, but there is no reason why you cannot buy another tax disc at a post office.

It looks as though road tax will not be going up by as much as planned now thanks to the credit crunch.

In the pre budget report last week it was announced that the maximum rise will be just £5 from March 2009.
