Fuel light and volume of fuel in fuel tank

Hi guys,

I have a question on the size of the fuel tank
well usually when ever my fuel gauge shows red light
i just go and refuel my car, but every time when i refuel my car i can only
refuel up to 38 or 39 max in my car when the red light comes on
does that mean that i have a small fuel tank?
or does that mean when the fuel gauge red light comes on i have still got 10 litres of fuel left?

Thanks in advance

If you're consistently only putting that amount of fuel in, i would say yes, your light comes on when you have 10ltr left. on the MC, the light goes red when there are two bars left on the guage, im assuming the MCS is the same. When mine comes on, the OBC normally says i have about 90/100 miles left in the tank which is the equivalent to about 2.5 gallons which is 10ltrs - and i tend to get about 45-50mgp so is about right.

Hope that makes sense im a bit hazy this morning after a bit of a night out

The red light comes on when you have 8 litres in the tank.

I think the MCS has a bigger tank than the non S cars. The handbook has capacities in and, as above, the gauge turns red when on reserve of 8 litres. Having run mine quite low recently to see how accurate the gauge was I found it was pretty accurate when reserve comes on.

On the R50/52/53 the fuel tank is the same size.

On the R56 the S has a bigger tank (10 litres bigger)

They are all the same as far as i no... Not sure BMW would make a bigger tank for one model off car when the 50 ltr tank is ggod enough. Imagine the extra cost of making another tank.

Thats why stuff like the R56 brakes etc work on R53 cars as they use the same measurements etc etc and things fit on either car to keep costs down.

Not sure about the US market, but for the UK market, only the Works and S have 50l tanks - the first/one/cooper/cooper d have 40l tanks.

40l isn't tiny - has about the same range as a first gen car on 50l

I guess we have gone well off topic, but since we are already there - In the US, we only get JCW, S, and Cooper (the "justa"). They all have the 50l tank whether R55, R56, or R57. This is a regional difference I didn't know about before. Kind of interesting.
