Strange Engine Noise maybe?? Hey guys, Im kinda new to the Mini world. I just had my 2005 Mini Cooper S Auto for a few months and I think the engine makes a strange noise. I just recently serviced (oil, filter, air filter, pollen, replaced broken thermostat). If anyone could help, would be a great help. Thanks |

| Very cool, that you provided an mp3. I downloaded and listened. Its hard to diagnose a problem via sound. However. I'm no expert, but I have worked with cars in a garage for over 6 years now. The sound sounds like noisey lifters. They don't sound tooo bad. What I suggest you do is check your oil level. Take the dip stick and see where the level is at if its low add oil right away. When is the last time you did an oil change? Are you using 5w30 synthetic? There are additives out there that you can add to the oil and take care of noisey lifters. However, I've never used them on a car like a Mini Cooper, or a car that recommends synthetic oil. So I can't really fully recommend those additives unless you hear it from an "expert". Hope that helps. At least its a start to check your oil, because low levels of oil will dry up the lifters |

| I should of read over your OP again before I posted. It said you recently did an oil change. Some people who do oil changes like to rush it. By filling it up with oil, check dip stick, and get the car out. The level of the oil would be fine when first checked, but car needs to run for a bit with new oil then shut off and checked the level again. So there might be a chance that there isn't enough oil in your car. I've worked in a shop and seen when it was busy, people wouldn't bother turning the car on to check the oil. They just filled it to the top and rolled the car out. Make sure there is NO oil leaks. I don't know how hands on you are, but put you can lift the car and see if their is any visible leaks. Otherwise from the sounds of the file you provided I think it's not very major. Does the sound go away as the car starts to warm up after a few minutes? Thats usually when the lifters are well lubricated and the oil is splashing in the top part of the engine. |
