Australia Strange Engine Sound below 2000RPM

All,

I just had a 2006 Cooper S go in for a replacement clutch and flywheel, and on return it sounds very rough below 2000rpm, akin to a spluttering tractor.

From the driver seat, it sounds as though you've changed into far too low a gear, even in first from take off. As the revs hit 2000, the engine suddenly becomes smooth. The same with 2nd. The only other way I could describe it would be to say below 2000rpm it sounds like a diesel, or as if something is rattling or lose.

Has anyone got any suggestions?

The mechanic thinks there is nothing wrong, and a trip to BMW came back with the same answer.

Thanks

Canada Stop driving your mini and change your timing chain tensioner immediately

I find it incredible that your mechanic and dealer told you all is good.

Does this sound familiar?

Start the car, all is good, drive for a minute and then the car starts to rattle like a diesel tractor at idle? Rev it up to 1500 rpm and the rattle starts going away, above 2000 rpm all is smooth....how am I doing so far?

Well I did make an appointment to have it checked out but kept driving my r53 in the meantime....tensioner went, timing chain chewed up my oil pump....set me back $2500 in labor and parts...ended up paying close to $4 because once everything was taken apart I decided to install many new components.

don't want to make you paranoid but had I just changed the tensionner, I would've only had to pay about $500. $4k hurts, even if I have a bunch of new components under the hood now.

that's my 2 cents.
