Question Sluggish MCS

Hi there,

I have just bought a 2003 Mini Cooper S, but it's quite sluggish in first gear. I have driven a few before which have taken off pretty sharply, however, mine needs a lot of revs to get anywhere fast in first.

Would this be plugs and points?

I will be looking to upgrade a few parts later in the year to get a bit more welly from the old girl, but for now I would like to get her quick off the mark like she would of been from the factory.

Everything is standard and the car was serviced recently.

Any help would be massively appreciated. And now I've finally got my hands on a MCS I will be posting on here a bit more!

Thanks in advance!

It may be plugs.

Have you pulled them and check the condition? Really easy to do.

Mine takes off a little slower than it does in 2nd gear. It seems like more boost is applied in 2nd to me.

You can see the bypass valve from the engine
Myn was crap wasn't opening or closing when I first got the car.
It's the spring you can push it and see if it strong and if it pushes back
I always check mine just in case I got another dealt one from BMW .
They've fixed the problem doe no worrying if your buying a new one
Easy job to change yourself too

Do you happen to have a picture of the valve so I know what I'm looking for?

Basically under the right intercooler horn It's connected there onto the horn. There a black like thing that pushes into the bypass and pushed back out by a spring. It's the air that pushed the valve open. The spring can be faulty on the earlier minis. Find that and push it in and if springs back out firmly it's fine but if there's play it could be at fault. Sorry about not able to upload my photos
Hope this naff write up helps
