If I reverse down my drive and then drive away, the car will start to go forward and then stutter, like its lost ignition or fuel. After that, all is fine. Next junction, all fine. It only happens going from reverse to first. We have owned the car for 18 months and has always done it, but would be good to get to the bottom of why it does. Anyone else had the same problem?
The car is an R53 JCW of 2003 vintage.
Its almost as if the act of reversing sloshes the fuel in the tank opposite to normal and something is blocking the fuel pick up momentarily.
Does it jolt if you brake hard then move off?
You say jolt? and before stutter? I would call stutter as like the engine misfiring, where as a jolt is a one off kick?
A one off jolt after changing direction could be something to do with excess play somewhere in the drive train?
After 18 months of ownership, we have had fuel levels at all heights. It feels like it just stalls completely and then just carries on as if nothing has happened. Mate went to GTT to get some work done on his and tried to explain it to them and nothing they had heard of. Imagine just slipping your foot of the clutch and stalling it with a jump, but being able to then smoothly get the biting point back under control. Thats the feeling. As we roll back down the drive and turn out onto the road, it then faces downhill, so not as if the car clutch faces a difficult direct to take up the strain.
Drivetrain is all good. I have recently done an oil change on the box as a matter of just wanting to and clutch was done 10k miles ago. All mounts are sound. If that was the case, we would get clonking or movement when backing off the throttle on over run.
Glad I have come here to resolve all my mini issues !!!
Ino the bypass valves were faulty in them years. Myn was. But hmm don't think that would be the fault.
Does the car make a noise when this happens? Or just a noise like stalling
Ion it sounds stupid but maybe get everything cleaned? Ie the fuel, and the cat with some cat cleaner. This will clean the injectors. And the crap buildup in the exhaust.
Is your battery okay?
This is were I would start they are not hard to do and cheap. Then it will rule them out
Battery good ( 18 months old) Exhaust seems fine. It only does it after reversing. We have a new brether fitted before we got it to the rocker cover. I have fitted a K&N 57i plus home made heat shield, but did it from day one before I changed that. The car runs perfectly well. Emmisions on the last MOT were not even recordable !!! It is running that well. New plugs, new leads, fresh oil and filter............list goes on.
Car just starts to pull away and just drops for a milli second, clears and goes and never does it after that again.
I have 2003 MCS that had the same problem, then suddenly got much worse, with ACS light on first, then soon, emissions light also came on, and became very bad to drive. Local garage checked plugs, elctrical, reset ECU, but couldn't find the problem. They sent to CAMCO in Warrington (have all the diagnostics kit) and found it was the MAP sensor. Replaced, and everything's fine now.
