Mcs convertible just stops

MORNING ALL NEW HERE
great site, have picked up a few tips already
but i have a small problem with my trusted mini
its a 2006 cooper s cab and altho it has been trouble free for years . out of the blue it just stopped while on tickover.
i restarted it and altho it did start it just as before stopped instantly
if i start it and give it some light throttle it will rev up great and drive great ,but the moment the throttle is not pressed it dies
i have had the throttle body off and all is well there, same with the bypass valve, . i have also removed the intercooler and looked for any signs of where air could leak in, all is well. with engine running ,,,foot on gas ,,, i have sprayed carb cleaner around throttle body ,bypass valve and around the intercooler to see if any of the vapour got sucked in by an air leak and race the engine a little, but no such look so feel sure this is not an air leak problem,,also have removed map sensor on intake and cleaned but not able to test.


thinking some one on here might have had similar problem and could give me an idea of what this problem may be

Hi and welcome

I am glad this site has helped you out already :-)

There are a few things to check out but, I think you need to run a diagnostic test on it first really to Check all the System out

It sounds to me like may be a sensor problem but which one that's the million dollar question.
When was it last serviced I take it you have checked plugs, filter, sc belt.
Have you had the fuel filter changed should not cause it but worth doing as they never get done
Have you taken the HT leads of the coil pack they do suffer with corrosion

But I would check the throttle peddle potentiometers are clean and working correctly they get full of crud. If you clean them be careful they are delicate

What's it like on fuel have you noticed it drinking more than normal as it could be a bad 02 sensor. The bank 1 does not always bring on an engine check light. But can messes your idle up and make the car run rich.

Have you disconnected the battery and left it disconnected for a while to reset the DME Just Incase the car is a bit confused.

Normally if the TMAP or MAP start playing up you get a engine check light, but it may be worth checking the plastic pipe work to the map sensor they brake right by the sensor.

Does the car still stall with your foot on the brake as well as off the brake.

As a note and a worth while thing if your are around the engine check torque you spark plugs they do loose torque and come out causing problems

thankyou for your reply i will try and check what i can from your list
car has good service history last one at 42 and now on 52k
mpg is still same as ever a crappy 26- 29mpg
have had the coil pack and leads off to check but they look as new with no weasr signs at all, they have had a clear grease on them also plugs out and refitted all well there.
car still cuts out foot on brake or not even cuts out if your driving and have to take foot off gas to apply brake in traffic . i disconected the battery for a while to see if that helped but all it did was change the fault from cut out to now hunting 800revs to 2000 revs, altho still a fault car can be driven without having to restart at every junction or stopped traffic. this will help to get it to the mini guy on saturday where it is booked to go on the bmw computer...
the one thing i have noticed is the throttle body . the plate is slightly open with ignition on which looks normal, but as the car starts the flap closes tight and will open slightly when car stalls out,, will check back with result from mini garage at weekend .

Get them to check the EGR valve too they stick and get clogged up, that can cause cutting out problems.

Hi ya

I think it's possible that your throttle or your peddle potentiometers may be playing up.

It might be worth you disconnecting the battery and checking your DME (engine control module) wiring. I would disconnect the plugs and check them for corrosion/water, you may have a bad connection somewhere, also remove and clean the plug to the throttle body.

It sounds like a feed back error but with out running a diagnostic on it, it's hard to say.

QUICK UPDATE
went into big mini works on saturday. the guy there has found the problem
there is a crack in the plastic pipe that feeds the intercooler, part ordered he fitting tomorrow i will let you know if all is well after i have driven it,
guy sounds like he knows his minis and works on them alot, could he be my new mini repair guy ???

ALL NICE AGAIN
picked mini up this morning and all back to normal,,supercharger intake pipe replaced due to 1" crack along its seam.
well done andy at BIG MINI WORKS wakefield repaired on time and on price nice clean garage and great guy to deal with, am going back soon for window motor replacement
