Hello all, looking at a Mini Cooper S and have a couple questions
New to the forum, and new to the Mini brand. My wife is looking at a 1st generation Cooper or Cooper S. They seem like pretty solid cars overall. We have driven both and the S is definitely a sportier ride. However the S we drove had a high pitched ring/rattle that sounded like it was coming from the supercharger. Are they trouble prone or was this one we had out just an anomaly? Also how does the standard Cooper and the S compare for fuel economy and reliability? Would I be better off getting her a second generation standard Cooper vs a first generation S?
Thank-you in advance and looking forward to being part of the community when we finally pull the trigger on one.

Drive another S and compare noises. The S will have a throw-out bearing rattle which is a small annoyance but not a problem. You will find on this site Ss that have travelled 200K miles or more. Check for maintenance schedules and what major work has been done if any. As for fuel, I get 12 mpg at the track and up to 35 on hwy.

Well picked one up today, a 2003 S with 63000 miles on the clock. I have a few items to address but overall a solid car. Looking forward to learning more about these cars and becoming part of the forum.
