DIY Coolant system issues

Hi guys,

I have replaced nearly every part on my 05 cooper s r53 due to this coolant leak im having,

New radiator,
New thermostat
New JCW Head
New Head gasket
new expansion tank

I have bled the system properly but i have just used water in the system as i didn't have coolant on hand but when i fill the expansion bottle to max and a few days later it drops quite a bit??

Im a bit confused as to were its going or maybe its evaporating?

Thanks
William

Hi ya

Is it dropping to the same level every time ?

I would do a hydrocarbon check on the system Incase you have a cracked cylinder liner or a duff head or gasket Incase It's quick and easy to do.

Then if that's ok I would have a good look round the heater matrix see if you can see any coolant staining or smell coolant or if the windows in the car are suffering with condensation on cold mornings or nights.

You can make a tester to pressurise the cooling system but I would not advise this if you are unshore.

Have a good look at the hoses from the coolant tank to, Incase it's chaffed on anything
I had a close one on mine with the hose that comes from the water pump and there cross someone had put the clip in the wrong position and near had cut though the other hose.

Have you had a look round your water pump and the thermostat housing ?

You can also get a dye to add to the cooling system which might be handy if it's a pain to find

Hope this helps
